You're just a pussy. The game is hard, but it's not that hard. Most of the time I ended up dying because of doing something stupid like flying around and depth charging myself over and over again. (Hint: trying that is cool, but when you drop the charge, it's going to do it in the direction you point, so be sure to change direction.)
Now, I don't dare play it on Ultra. Normal is hard enough. The key thing is to stay put if the enemies are coming in. If even one guy comes though, he's going to take a base. The same applies to their side, too, though. Sometimes I swoop to the other side of the level and take a base or two of theirs.
Also, I've seen situations like yours plenty of times, too. It's usually because you're being out-flanked. The best thing to do it take an END base, defend it, and slow move the offense. After that, the last base is always the hardest to take, but I've had shutouts before.
Rosalina: But you didn't.
Robert: But I DON'T.
Rosalina: You sure that's right?
Robert: I was going to HAVE told you they'd come?
Rosalina: No.
Robert: The subjunctive?
Rosalina: That's not the subjunctive.
Robert: I don't think the syntax has been invented yet.
Rosalina: It would have had to have had been.
Robert: Had to have...had...been? That can't be right.
