You mean just in Japan? I'm pretty sure Melee sold in excess of five million.
Mediacreate only covers Japan, Melee sold 1.5 million in Japan according to Mediacreate.

I disagree, it has to do with the 3D Mario series not being popular in Japan. Mario 64 had limited success in Japan; It sold well initially but sold much better in other markets. I don't see any logic behind a wider userbase being reason for poorer sales of a game; especially when the sales data does not agree with this as Mario Galaxy shattered the sales rate of Mario Sunshine exceeding the total sales in about two months. I think it is clear that a wider userbase has only helped the series. In addition, New Super Mario Brothers sold about 6 million copies in Japan, the difference is that it is a 2D Mario game.
