No home PC likely until wednesday. Buried $450 on newegg to get replacement parts. Ended up with 2GB of RAM, 8600GT (DDR3) 2.66 Conroe and an ABIT mobo.

Motherboard must have got zapped when the power went out because of the wind we've been having here. Power just flickered and I think it bypassed the surge protector. Looking into a UPS.

Yikes, I've been lucky enough to never have that happen.

Which graphics card did you buy, specifically? I've been toying with the idea of finally ditching my 2 7600GS's for an 8600GT. Too many games hate SLI or just don't do anything with it.

Ive been wanting to build a new pc, but when I look at cases I cant find anything I like within the amount I want to pay for one. I also cant seem to justify the cost of a new pc since I dont really do any gaming on the pc anymore.

I rarely do much gaming on the 360 now too...somewhere along the way I got all domesticated lol

Really though, I have a hard time finding a game that keeps my attention for very long.

Besides, we'd fight over who would get to use the 65in HDTV and who would have to use the 25in crappy tv. :bully:

My backlight on my laptop went out recently, it looks pretty sad at the moment since I have the screen removed and use a spare LCD screen when I'm at work... hoping I can fix it (if not new excuse to upgrade)

You can buy decent ones nowadays for $550 complete with a 20 inch LCD monitor. Even as low as 300.

No, you can't.

You can buy a COMPUTER for that price, but I use that term losely. If it's $550 and includes a 20" monitor they skimped on a lot of the parts. It would never cut it as a gaming rig. In most cases the systems are that cheap because the video's onboard or they're using cheap ass parts.

So can your mom buy a complete computer for $550 to talk to your sorry butt on AIM and browse the internet? yes. Can anyone who wants a decent quality computer get one for that price? Not unless they built it by hand.

Of course. Anyone who has used a rig for gaming knows this. I'm not sure what Seek is trying to say or prove, we all know the purpose of your machine...

I could def build a cheap case, cheap power supply, mobo with onboard video/sound, and cheap monitor with built in speakers for $300, but it would only be good at using MS Word (which would be an extra $150).

You forgot the price of an OS too ;)

Well, you could be right, I'll let you be the judge.

$550:

AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual Core 4400+
2GB DDR2 Memory
320 GB harddrive,
Super multi drive (whatever that is)
9 in 1 card reader (just for SD cards and stuff)
Windows Vista Home Premium
ATI Radeon X1250
DVD RW blah blah 16X

This with a 20 inch LCD monitor.

As long as it can run the latest version of Civ or a Sim game, I am fine, and it runs Civ 4 flawlessly on max settings and max sized maps, opponents, etc...Of all the games I played on my last computer (including World of Warcraft) Civ 4 was the one that struggled the most (on max settings of course, it was fine on average sized maps and such).

That looks like you lifted it from the Office Depot ad... only highlighted the good parts and didn't mention stuff that could make it look bad.

Manufacturers man-- for everything. Memory, HD, Video, optical, Motherboard, sound, Monitor. What about case and PSU?

I could build a PC with that specs for probably a little less if I went with totally shitty parts too.

Well, it does what I need and more. Runs very smoothly. I have no doubt that it is of lower quality than say a Power Mac, but I didn't want to shell out $2800.

In addition, it does not have any problems running Windows Vista.

I don't believe that for a second. You won't pay MS $40 a year for Live-- there's no way you're paying them $100+ for an OS; especially when you could just steal it.

Yes.

Well...did you buy it separately, or did you get a student discount, or get a legit copy with a purchase of a pc?

If you really want to know my PSU and case, I'll tell you when I get home.

Though I don't think that a manufacturer would be spending the same price on computer parts as someone buying them individually.
