Sigh...patience, people... The 360 already has DMC4 and Lost Odyssey. Ninja Gaiden 2, Gears of War 2, Too Human, GTA4, Fallout 3, Mercenaries 2, and Infinite Undiscovery are all set to be released fairly soon. By the time you're done with all of that, Konami would have finally had their head screwed on straight to port MGS4 to the 360.

For god's sake, don't buy a console for one game.

What do we know about Infinite Undiscovery other than that it has one of the worst titles I've ever heard?

SineSwiper wrote:For god's sake, don't buy a console for one game.
I don't, there are a few other games I want for it (Eye of Judgement, Uncharted, and Time Crisis 4 mainly). MGS4 I've been dyin' for and if the system drops another $100, which I think it will by E3, then I might be far too tempted to get a used 60GB one, which I could probably get for $250 or so by then. Considering Little Big Planet and God of War 3 are coming out this year as well, there's enough on the system to warrant a purchase by the end of 2008.

I really wouldn't be TOO sure about MGS4 on the 360. Sure we had MGS2:Substance on XBox, but MGS3 didn't go multi for a reason even with a much bigger userbase on the Xbox (MGS2 didn't sell too well on the Xbox) and if the PS3 catches up to the 360 this year a bit as expected, there may not be a reason for them to spend the coin on porting it over. Silicon Knights was given Twin Snakes with Nintendo's push so really, MGS2 was the only one they did themselves. It only gets ported if a) Sony didn't pay a pretty penny for a year or so of exclusitivity, which I say they did AND b) the PS3 doesn't sell well all year, which I say it does.

The original XBox, except for a few games (Ninja Gaiden, Psychonauts), sucked. It was in last place in the console race, so obviously MGS2 didn't sell well, and it wouldn't be economically sound to try MGS3 on the same console.

Now, things are different. The XBox 360 is top dog, and a port to the 360 is the only thing that makes economic sense. Why alienate a large userbase like that, especially when a profit is almost guaranteed?

The game is exclusive to PS3. Also, there isn't nearly the market for it on Xbox 360 as there is on PS3. First of all, once the PS3 was released in Europe, Xbox 360 sales halted; Europe is the top market for the MGS series. Additionally, a fairly large chunk of MGS games sell in Japan, and Xbox 360 is non-existant there. Next, the MGS series isn't the type of game that Xbox fans buy.

Porting costs. Sales are guaranteed. Profits are not. We've already talked about this. (Notice I'm not arguing it won't happen, just that there is a valid reason not to do it.)

It is Japanese made, past iterations did not sell well on the Xbox.

I should also point out that Konami stated this is a PS3 exclusive.

Yeah, really. There's no such thing as "XBox fans". I bought the 360 because it's the one with the most exclusives for games I want. If it was on the PS3, I would have bought that. I didn't like the original XBox too much.

I don't have an allegiance to one console or another, unlike certain people on this board that rhymes with Beeker.
Dutch wrote:It is Japanese made, past iterations did not sell well on the Xbox.
Which I already pointed out didn't mean anything. One was unpopular, this version is popular. That changes everything. Hell, the 360 is selling pretty well in even Japan (for different reasons that over here).
Dutch wrote:I should also point out that Konami stated this is a PS3 exclusive.
They can state that there will be monkeys flying out of my ass, for all I care. I'm sure the game will be exclusive AT FIRST, but as soon as their 6 month exclusiveness clause ends, they'll start porting on the 360.

And if not, whatever. I'll wait until the end of the console season when the PS3 price drops to $200 or so and I'm bored with my 360. But that's still at least a year or so off.
Kupek wrote:Porting costs. Sales are guaranteed. Profits are not. We've already talked about this. (Notice I'm not arguing it won't happen, just that there is a valid reason not to do it.)
Yeah, well, most of the other multi-console games are doing just fine with their porting costs, so it must not be all that large. In fact, this is probably the best generation for multi-console games. Never seen so many in previous generations.

Actually, this is how the Xbox 360 is doing in Japan today:

Wii - 78,583 [628,758]
NDS Lite - 62,362 [642,810]
PSP - 59,654 [602,410]
PlayStation 3 - 17,637 [224,625]
PlayStation 2 - 11,266 [94,467]
Xbox 360 - 2,198 [30,878]

Where is your evidence on how Xbox 360 fans do not exist?

There was only one that came to Xbox: MGS2:Substance. And it was a year later. Anybody who really wanted to play it already had already done so on the PS2.

Dead Rising was a Japanese game that sold over a million on the Xbox.

Agreed.

And same with Lost Planet BTW. In fact, both games did very well outside of Japan but poor in it. Same with the Metroid series

I can't disagree, but if this same logic works with the PS3 then there's no reason to port this one over to Xbox 360 either.

Depends. If the exclusitivity with Sony runs through the Xmas holidays it might be tough. But if they could, say, get it out by November or even mid-December (6 months after release) then there's a better chance.

Since the game was developed on the PS3 first, it isn't a horrible port job. 360 to PS3 apparently is brutal.

I'm probably gonna get a 60GB one used, actually. It'll be cheaper and it has the emotion engine in it. I have so many PS2 games and more will be coming out through next year that it's worth it to me

Dead Rising is new IP, so it's on a little bit shaker ground for porting. Plus, Zeus's comment about 360 to PS3 port rings true. The Orange Box PS3 port is probably a good indicator of this. It's much better to port from 360 to PC, which is what some games do.

I think it was EA or another big developer who actually said in an article last week (or early this week) that they are going to start all multi-platform development on the PS3 then port to the 360.

Also my bud at Ubisoft told me a long time ago that PS3-to-360 was really the only way to go 'cause of the architecture of the PS3 and the ease of development for the 360 in comparison.

On the former: DMC4 has been leading 360 sales charts. Every title Capcom has produced for the 360 has sold well.

On the latter: as BL has said, "past iterations" includes only a second-rate port of a title everybody had already played on the PS2.

I agree with you on both counts. I don't need no stinkin' Jap actors for this one. Usually you want subs because dubs are so fucking bad. But in rare cases (like the original Robotech or Akira or the MGS series) dub is better

I agree, lazy programming on their end here.....unless we're talking about an incessant amount cutscenes and voice acting. But even with hi-res textures and I think they're already announced that the in-game engine is uses for the majority of the cutscenes anyways.

There's not much room for debate on that one. :)

Metal Gear has some exceptional voice actors who do a great job in the North American version. It's the nature of the game, Konami wants you to take it seriously(Well as seriously as you can through Kojimi's warped humor)
