It wasn't that he couldn't afford the taxes. It was that he refused to pay them. Willie Nelson had a bad accountant and ended up poor, and couldn't pay. They auctioned off his stuff, and he made his famous IRS Tapes. Willie didn't get any jail time because he was willing to pay them if he had the money.

Snipes thought he could get away with NOT paying taxes, just because he was a celebrity. He refused to pay them, therefore he goes directly to jail.

Actually there are people like that. I read all about the different shit last night... most of it batshit stupid:

1) The 16th Amendment is either a) unconstitutional b) wasn't properly ratified or c) Ohio wasn't a state (Wrong, wrong, and stupid)

2) Even if the 16th amendment is thought to be right, it doesn't give the government any new power to levy taxes (wtf? yes it does... that's specifically what it does)

3) The 16th amendment fails to define the term "income" and wages should not be included as such. Income is supposed to be defined as profit from doing business whereas wages are (some claim) a trade; you are trading me my time and expertise for money.

Only #3 do I see as having any legs because it may actually have a point. Either way, however, it doesn't matter. The government WILL tax your income and you WILL pay, or you go to jail. If someone actually had the time, energy, etc to somehow challenge and WIN and nullify the 16th amendment it wouldn't' fix anything-- we'd just have 40% sales tax instead of income tax.

Take away income tax and you'll get the huge sales taxes like you said. But what about things like roads? I hate giving up my money as much as anyone (as you all well know) but there is a certain level we need to give up to better our society. There's gotta be SOMETHING.

You say I don't like to pay for things (which is mostly wrong, but that's not the point here), the people who do this are worse than thieves, they're leeches. They're not even contributing to the society they're taking from.

It's not realistic. Even if somebody declared the taxes unconstitutional, there would be an emergency session of Congress, and they would MAKE IT constitutional in a matter of hours.

That's not counting the Supreme Count trying to find some way to interpret the law to fit the natural order of things. Because, like it or not, judges will make decisions on not what the law says but whatever isn't going to rock the boat. If some lunatic said that there's no law on taxes, and by some miracle there isn't a law on it, they'll PRETEND that there is a law and leverage some other similar law/decree/precedent to interpret it that way.

That's also not counting the lower courts doing the same thing.

That's also not counting the prosecutor throwing every other law that he possibly could have violated at him. We had a person get away with murder and admit it afterwards. He served the longest perjury charges possible, even longer than what the murder rap would have brought him.

The IRS has a page on frivilious reasons to not pay taxes and they'll just slap you with an extra fine for wasting their time to point you toward the page. Pretty much most things that argue about the legitmacy of taxes falls under this category.
