Stupid dog throwing up all night...seriously cut into my GTA time. I did get to finish a few missions. It feels like playing a GTA on a next-gen, which is good, I think. I like some of the minor improvements like the button to focus on the car you're chasing.

PA's take
PA wrote:We're always impressed by each world's livingness, but historically the story structure - the obvious thread that we can grip and pull ourselves along - is hung about the neck with frustrating, repetitive gameplay. We end up burning out on free roaming in a couple days, taking random missions or sitting in a parking lot listening to the radio.
This!

Overall, this is the problem I tend to have with the series. The graphics, the details, the experience is great. But when it comes to actually PLAYING THE GAME, it's the same gameplay, the same repetition, just with a new flair.

I played through GTA:VC because it was my first GTA game. But after a while of even playing that, I just said fuck it and turned on cheat codes, in order to finish the game. Shellie bought GTA3, played a little bit of it and gave it to me. I played a little bit of it, and never played it again. The mechanics are the same, except with a new story. I just ended up blowing shit up or shooting people on the street, rather than actually doing missions. When I got bored with that, I got bored with the game.

Haven't played much of GTA4, but I'm expecting much of the same. You guys seemed to be doing the same thing I did with GTA3: more interested in fucking around in the lobby and multiplayer games than actually playing for real. To be honest, I think Crackdown was a better game in terms of playability than GTA. Being able to jump across buildings and beating the shit out of criminals with a car just seemed more fun.

I'd disagree that Crackdown has better playability. I love Crackdown, but that game is the definition of repetitive gameplay. I don't see how you can slam GTA for that, but praise Crackdown in the same post. :)

I never even got into the online last night because the single player is a lot of fun. It seems like this game will actually have a pretty awesome story and I like your character. Comparing GTA to Crackdown again, at least with GTA, while many of the missions revolve around the same general premise (chase these guys, kill this guy, pick up these guys, deliver this, etc) at least it does it around the frame of a story and adds some unique twists to each mission. Crackdown really is find criminal, enter area, kill lots of guys, kill criminal, go back to safehouse, restart. Yeah, the super powers were fun, so if it weren't for those Crackdown would have sucked.

I TOTALLY agree with you (and Penny Arcade I guess). I wasn't planning on getting this game for a while until I heard about the multiplayer. I had much more fun playing around with Seraphina and Tessian than I did actually playing the single player. The multiplayer matches we did end up playing were great, other than some strange loading issue we had. Some people loaded in and others hung in the loading screen for an obscene amount of time while hearing their teammates say "hey, please start driving the car. Why are you not driving the car?" when the driver was stuck in the loading screen.

Oh! and apparently the coop story mode is called "hangman's noose" and it is a 4 player set of coop missions. Sadly, you are not allowed to play the story mode in coop. We also need to figure out how to setup a game of freeplay that does not include randoms.

how many GTA games have you played? I've gone through 3 and vice city twice (didn't get far in 1, have never played 2, and skipped over san andreas), and iv's mission structure is just to cookie cutter from 3 and vice city that it just feels like playing those games all over again. The multiplayer is amazing because it's so refreshing. I hope to god that the downloadable content packs are more coop missions... since the multiplayer component is so much fun.

In closing, the single player isn't bad, it's just that I, personally, am already bored with it... I'll still play through it though.

*EDIT*
closing thoughts part II - my pal lukas is having tons of fun with it because this is his first experience playing through the single player of a GTA post-III. I totally acknowledge that it is a fun experience, but the mission structure has not changed. This is just me being nitpicky.

Myself? I played GTA 2 back in the day. :)

I do agree that it is just like the other GTA games, but I think the story (so far) is more involved than the past games. I'm just up to the second Jamacian guy mission, and I already get a sense of what Niko is about, and his backstory. I cant say that about the Vice city guy (granted, I didnt play the game, Sine played it) and I didnt like GTA San Andreas.

And yes, the multiplayer will probably be the best part about GTA4, but so far, I am enjoying the single player story as well.

Was your friend the guy that came in the lobby later that night? I was wondering who that was hehe

I'm loving the single player. it could be that I just love the characters involved at this point and god forbid niko is the first GTA character to actually be likable. I'm actually enjoying it. I'm only to the second island but at this point it's actually got me pretty engrosed.....so much so that I almost delayed on picking up my comics today....but no...that will never happen and I'm off to get my comics.....

But, seriously, do you really want to take a mission that involves going on a date? Or do you want to blow the living fuck out of shit?

Do you want to drive some dickhead over to a bar? Or do you want to blow the living fuck out of shit?

Do you want to run away from the police like a little girl? Or do you want to...

Not to mention, half the time I was doing stuff to improve my powers. That was half the fun. Especially finding all of the shit to get higher jumps.

No.

You can't compare GTA4 to Crackdown. Not allowed. Crackdown was literally what Lox said, add in some freakin acrobatics and that was it. GTA4 is a LOT more than what you just said above, why don't you actually PLAY the game before doing so.

On a DIFFERENT note-- Bovine / BL --> Which one of you invited that dickbag tonight? thehybridtheory or whatever, GOD was he annoying. Wouldn't shut up, wouldn't stop complaining... was an awesome night of gaming aside from his assholeness.

actually I agree on that the only ones with checkpoints are ones wiht multipe steps like the job interview. it can be pretty annoying as there are some misions with decent length but they also are all one part....it can be annoying as tthere were a couple that could have used em.....

Yeah, that irritated me a bit too. I had to make my wife wait about 10 minutes before going out to dinner so I could finish the mission I was given.

In today's gaming world, there's ZERO reason not to be able to save anytime, anywhere.

You get a 6 star rating, not a 5. I tried it tonight... also, you don't have to get over the barricade, I just tried to ram it and when part of my body went part way past the barricade it went 6 stars on me. Needless to say I didn't survive too much longer after that.

I'm having issues connecting to online games for some reason. Everytime I try, it takes me to the setup screen and no one else ever joins. If I try joining a game, it says I got disconnected. I remember this happening with Halo 3 when it was first out. I had to run a direct connection to my Xbox instead of a wireless one for a week. I hope I don't have to do that with GTA.

So I just got doublecrossed in the single player game. The single player game is great. Shooting controls though make me feel like Corky from thirtysomething. I feel that retarded shooting. Not sure what is going on with that. Wish Rockstar would have stayed with the two stick method other games use (IE COD4).

Oh well.
