This is likely going to turn into a general "bitch about work" thread, but I don't care.

So, I've managed to get a summer job. Yay me, right? The job itself pays quite well--280 dollars a week, which is super cool for me, poor college student--but the job itself quite sucks. I am a canvasser for an Environmental organization/lobbyist group. My job is to go door-to-door and basically ask people for money.

Yeah, you can imagine how well that goes. Sad thing is, I'm good enough at the job. First day I made 70 bucks, second I made 180. Yesterday I only made 15, which sucked, but whatever--there are always bad days.

My problem is that, after my canvassing was done, yesterday, I was called in by my boss (one of two)--this little 20-something hippie girl--who told me that my attitude was far too negative and basically threatened to fire me if I didn't act more enthusiastic about my job.

This I found rather offensive. Mostly because, frankly, if I do the job and I'm not causing trouble for anybody, I don't really see how my attitude has anything to do with it, especially since any negativity I may express is usually around my co-workers, and I do my best to be very respectful to my bosses. I am, after all, a professional, if nothing else.

So, after informing me of this, I go in and try to discretely warn one of my coworkers that this particular boss seems quite upset tonight and may chew him out too. Evidently, this was overheard and reported, and I got yelled at again. She seemed genuinely SHOCKED that I may have some kind of dislike for going DOOR TO FUCKING DOOR, and was like "Well, why should I keep you? With an attitude like that, why shouldn't I terminate you?"

Well, to be fair, its valid enough of a point. One shouldn't be terribly negative about ones job, at least not while you are there. Personally, I don't feel I was being that negative--I think its just because my sense of humor is wry and sarcastic, which comes across as negative to self-righteous leftists. So, yeah, if it is important that I show a better attitude or whatever, fine. I can do that. Its what the job demands, and I like to do my jobs well.

But jesus CHRIST. This is not exactly a GREAT job. It is, in fact, a pretty terrible job, and the only reason I am doing it is so I can get a rather large amount of money stockpiled over the summer. If it wasn't this, I'd be doing something else, like being a clerk or a fast food worker. I don't give two shits about the organization, and I don't really believe they are actually making a huge difference in their "war against global warming". It is a job, and my incentive for going door to door, dealing with shitty people and trying to convince them to give me their hard-earned money is so that, in turn, that hard-earned money becomes MY hard-earned money. That's how jobs basically work: I go in, I work, I get paid. That's all I particularly care about, and unless my attitude is affecting my work, this really shouldn't be a problem.

Truth be told, I really do hate the job, and if it wasn't for the convienience of having the job, I'd quit right now. As it is, I'm starting to search for an alternative employment, which I might as well, summer classes are coming up and it would be so terrible to be fired from my shitty door-to-door job and have nothing but summer school to keep me busy. And, yeah, evidently, my negative attitude might make other people "discouraged" and make them unenthusiastic about working.

Frankly, though, who the fuck needs MY help to be unenthusiastic about a fucking door to door pan-handling job?

Well, it sounds like enthusiasm is important to your job, so I can sort of understand where she is coming from. If someone can do the job better than you, then they're going to take the job.

Also, $280 for a job you don't even like? Look for something else. Even call center monkeys make 500+ a week and it sounds like a job that you might find less painful.

Joanna: You know what, Stan, if you want me to wear 37 pieces of flair, like your pretty boy over there, Brian, why don't you just make the minimum 37 pieces of flair?
Stan, Chotchkie's Manager: Well, I thought I remembered you saying that you wanted to express yourself.
Joanna: Yeah. You know what, yeah, I do. I do want to express myself, okay. And I don't need 37 pieces of flair to do it.
Also, "The beatings will continue until morale improves."

Sounds like your job sucks and your employers are stupid. But it also sounds like you're ill-suited for it, since you're working for a non-profit, but you don't care about their cause.

Yeah, the worse thing you can do is promote a cause for a non-profit and realize that they are scum. Fuck them. For the sake of your morality, leave the position and find a new one. In reverse order, of course.

Sure, there will be crap jobs, but a sales position should be with a company that you believe in. If you believe that they are a piece of shit, you shouldn't be tasked with the job of shining that shit.

It sounds like you hate your job and the people you work with. Quit. It'll make your life and those of your coworkers much easier.

Also, every dude (and it's always a dude) I've worked with that thinks his sense of humor has been wry and sarcastic, has in actual fact been an insufferably negative know-it-all prick. Be careful that you're not this guy, because you'll be making your coworkers miserable if you are.

Write a shitty resignation letter, give it to your boss, give her the finger, walk out, and never put down the job on a resume.

Am I the only one who thinks $280/week sucks ass for a college summer job? That's $7/hr (assuming 40 hours a week) which may be better than working concession at a movie theatre but still is far from great. That's a good HIGH SCHOOL summer job. College summer jobs should be more around the $10/hr mark. My best college summer job was working in my dad's factory for over $11/hr, and the internship that eventually landed me my permanent job was $10/hr.

Long story short-- you hate the job, your coworkers/superiors are morons, and the pay isn't that great... so why stick with it? You could make more than that landscaping or working as a waiter at a semi-decent restaurant.

Yeah, I, uh...quit.

And I couldn't be happier. My legs will be sore no longer.

Tomorrow is my friend's birthday, so much partying shall be had. Sunday, Monday...job search time again.

Its lucky, I suppose, that I have a stable financial security in the form of my parents. Since they give me an allowance and understand I have no other way of fending for myself without needing to buy food, they're not too upset over it.

I'll see if there are some good campus jobs. Fuck, I'd be happy to be working at the nearby Circle K. It's closer and simpler, my favorite two things in a summer job. Alas, I'm not 19 and thus cannot sell alchohol.

It's usually 20 and a day (not sure why the day, but whatever) to be able to sell alcohol. Probably varies per state laws, though. I've worked at a gas station for about 5 months before. Interesting experience. Be sure to card people, because the ABC guys are dicks.

Yep. Beer, but not hard liquor.

What alcohol can be sold where depends on state laws. In Virginia, liqour can only be sold in state-owned ABC stores. In West Virginia, you can buy it at 7-11.

Gas stations in DC cant sell beer, but there are beer/liquor stores everywhere so it doesnt matter. DC also stops selling alcohol from retail stores at 10, which is friggin early. I guess they try and encourage you to go to the bars.

KY (and I think IN) have stupid bar laws that force bars to close at 4AM, and no stores can sell alcohol after 4AM. Yet, after 6AM, you can suddenly buy alcohol again. Just a stupid two hour gap.

And then there's the dry counties. Never did understand what the fuck those people did. After all, in those backwater counties, it's so fucking boring that the only thing you CAN do is drink alcohol or smoke weed. (I guess they just smoke weed more often then.)
