  • RE5 to get Gears-like controls

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

Resident Evil's controls were total shit anyway. Who the fuck using the control stick to "turn" the character?

Oh, they are changing it another way? Bah! Even worse.

RE4's controls were just about perfect for the game that it was.

Except you couldn't walk while aiming/shooting

That's correct, but the game was designed to take account of that. Being able to move and shoot would have entirely changed the dynamics of the game. Whether this would have been for the better I don't know, but given that RE4 is one of my favourite games of all time I'm not going to complain about it.

Resident Evil hasn't been good since Code Veronica, so who gives a shit really?

Thank god Capcom made Dead Rising.

I'm cursed with good taste and the ability to see when a series has crossed completely over to the action genre. meh.

That RE4 was not a survival horror game proper is an opinion I understand; but the remake came out after CV, and is infinitely superior to it as a straight survival horror game.

Even so, though, you have deeply weird taste if you think RE4 is a bad game.

When I think of Resident Evil, I think of survival horror, and that's not what RE4 is (much to my disappointment). There are plenty of good action games out there - it's a flooded genre. With RE out of the picture in that genre, what do we have left? Condemned, Dead Rising and Silent Hill.

It's like if they took a real cool established concept like Shadowrun and turned it from the RPG we would all expect into some stripped-down online-only FPS...

*cough*

Shadowrun and RE can go fuck themselves.

The new survival horror genre is games like RE4, Dead Space, or Left 4 Dead. The older style with the questionable controls is dying...and I couldn't be happier. I always loved the RE or Silent Hill games, but I just dealt with the shitty controls. I think it's better to have RE4 or Gears controls. Those games are all about atmosphere and storyline anyways (well, most of them), there's nothing wrong with bringing the gameplay up to par

Has anyone here played the Fatal Frame games? I've only played about an hour or so of the first one. Seemed pretty neat.

Heh, I picked that game back up again, after about a year of getting pissed off at the mechanics. It still really pissed me off that the clock, save points, and those fucking military agents are unforgiving. (Geesh, even with the katana, I still lose a bar or two of health before I get to one of them, and they usually come in pairs.)

However, the story is pretty cool, and still having a lot of fun with it. Currently in Overtime mode right now. Hope to get the Megaman blaster and work on the Saint achievement afterwards.

The more I played it, the more I appreciated the challenge the clock brought. And save points are irrelevant once you get to a certain level (because you'll never die).

If you are at or near level 50, the katanas are a waste of space. Chuck them out and go melee only (maybe keep a hunting knife on you for clearing swarms around survivors in a pinch). Frank >>>> weapons. Fill up your entire inventory with OJ from the supermarket (if in overtime mode) and the health book.

If you are pretty far under level 50, grab 2-3 mini chainsaws and the 3 books that + em. You could clear out half the mall before one of those break and they are the best melee weapon in game.

Well, I missed the part where you get the small chainsaws, so I'm already fucked there. I'm at level 30, which is decent enough to survive, but death still annoys me when I run out of drinks. (I prefer just mixing the OJ, since I can do it right there at Roastmasters.)

Melee is just starting to get better with the suplex and other stuff, but getting it to hit a simple X+B when you're getting gunned down can result in 5 missing heath bars. 3 quick chops with the Katana will kill an agent.

I actually agree with Kali, RE4 was a drastic departure from the formula sets by the first 4 RE games, and RE's Gamecube remake showed it wasn't completely impossible to reinvent RE without departuring from what actually made it RE.

I don't think anyone would argue that RE4 was not a departure from the series' formula. To argue that it wasn't a great game, though; that's madness.
