I do, very much, agree that what you suggest would be the ideal state of things. There's not really much more I can add except that I feel that the barriers in place are going to be a long time yet.
On having to upgrade phones every year, I think I went through about 5 in the last 2 years, but I can see myself holding onto this one that I have until 2012 at least, Sony has a major one in the works set for that year, but I am a huge fan of the multitouch functions of the iPhone (like pinch zooming) so that would be a key sales point for me.
Yeah, I find this industry interesting, and it's goig to grow very very quickly.
