Alot of the eastern european spiritual successors *cough*ripoffs*cough* are actually pretty good. Wish I could remember the names.

I like X-Com, but I think the game took way too long before you get mind control because you got to save every turn or your guys get hosed and it takes a very long time to bulid a soldier to a level that is useful. Of course after you can mind control you kill everything without any human ever leaving your ship, except for the final alien to kill.
