  • Sega's 4 Wii titles in February and March

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

In terms of releases. Sega, owning a season on a Nintendo console with 4 high profile releases, I didn't think I would ever see the day. There might be a game or games that people here would be interested in.

NOW

This is Sega's Grindhouse stylized light gun style shooter, House of the Dead: Overkill. It has been just released. While this isn't the first House of the Dead for Wii (2 and 3 are already out) this does look to be the best one. Probably the best on the rails style game... Although I am really enjoying DQ Swords which I just got, but this game is getting better reviews. This game was released beside Acquire's Tenchu 4, a Tenchu game released by the original developer.

MadWorld is being developed by the former Clover Studios, now under the wing of Sega. It is an over the top ultraviolent game done with black and white graphics in a very graphical novel style setting. Another stylized violent game by Sega. game is out in a few weeks.

While the Sonic series has seen some very poor results in recent years. The first Wii specific Sonic game, Sonic and the Secret Rings seemed to come out with some positive reviews and became the top selling Sonic game in almost a decade (sparing handheld games and Mario and Sonic Olympics). This game is toned up quite a bit in the graphical effects department. Theme has changed, Sonic and the Secret Rings was Arabian, and Sonic and the Black Knight is Medieval. It looks like it'll be interesting. This game is out in a month.

I haven't really looked much into this one, but it seems that a lot of people on the IGN boards have been posting about it. The game uses nice graphics technology which has it looking very good and might be the best looking Standard Definition game to date. Oh, and the main character looks like Neo from the Matrix. This game is out in a couple of months.

I am getting Sonic for sure, but I will certainly be looking into the others as well.

At least they are trying to cater to the core audience, but it seems rather late in the game.

They're also doing Bayonetta. It's not for the Wii, but it definitely shows how Sega is realy branching out and not just making a long stream of awful sonic games. Good for them, maybe.

Correction: Clover is doing Bayonetta. The rest of the gaming studio is incapable of not doing nothing but Sonic games.

Hey, I might have to get that House of the Dead. I love that series. Thanks for the good word.

Your correction may, in itself, require correcting. Platinum Games is making Bayonetta. This studio is also responsible for madworld and sega is publishing.

Though they do contain the old clover guys, I am just trying to say that Sega is trying to branch out.

That's because basically every publisher missed the boat on it. So they're trying to play catch up now that many of the multi-million dollar budget games are faltering.

I saw a trailer of it in an EB the other day. It's quite aesthetically pleasing

Not a Wii game but March 4th will also see Empire: Total War for PC by Sega. When looking at Sega, they're not just the main Sonic Team, they have fulltime and contracted studios around the world. They've been on a long road of reinvention and I do think 2009 will be a major year for the new Sega; these next two months in particular.

Platinum Games, Clover Studios, same difference. Clover is easier to type, and most people know who they are.

They are doing this by buying other developers. I don't consider that "branching out". It's like saying 2K Games made Bioshock. Not really; it was the same Looking Glass/Irrational team that made SS2 and Deus Ex.

so by putting these studios under contract/buying them up, they are not branching out?

Sega bought the Creative Assembly (makers of the Total War series) in order to have a footing in the RTS market, of which they have none. That isn't branching out?

No, that's not branching out. That's buying companies. Branching out would be if a company actually, on its own power, went into new directions.

You don't have to internally develop new directions in order to branch out. A very strong business strategy that is employed by a shitload of businesses is to purchase a complimentary, up-and-coming, or even rival company in order to gain the competitive advantage that company has. It's often not only cheaper but more effective than attempting to internally develop the same thing (and have an additional strong competitor as well).

The purchase of Taito by Squeenix and The Creative Assembly by Sega are perfect examples of branching out. Do you honestly think that Sega could ever make an RTS close to the Total War series? If so, how much do you think it would cost them to get to that point only to hope to create a series that can hopefully compete with the Total War series?

Sega just announced they are working on a new Mario and Sonic Go to the Winter Olympics game. It is already very far along and will be out later this year.

Before the first one came out, Sega said they expected to sell 4 million combined

Some of you guys laughed

Then Sega instead sold 11 million

Then Sega laughed

I am surprised it sold 11M combined on DS and Wii. I always thought it would hit at least half that worldwide but 11M? That's fucking huge
