I had just finished rolling with the two purple belts at class that day, when my instructor literally started beating me with my new purple belt. That's how he promotes people: he catches them after rolling and beats them with their new belt. I've seen it happen enough times to know what was going on.

I've never been so happy to receive a beating, or felt so much appreciation to the man administering it.

The belt system is white, blue, purple, brown, black. I got my blue under one of my instructor's former students.

So, how many ways do you know how to kill a man with your bare hands now?

How long have you been doing BJJ? Isn't it typically about ten years of training to reach a black belt? (And no, I'm not making a Virtua Fighter joke.)

I've been doing BJJ, in total, for five years.

BUT.

I started back in Williamsburg, in a college club, and it was just white belts teaching white belts. I was in that club for two and a half years. When I came back to Blacksburg, I started training with a purple belt, and did so for a year. When he left town about two years ago, I started training with my current instructor, who is a Renzo Gracie black belt.

What I learned in two and a half years in that club, guys at my current place learn in six months. That's the difference a good instructor and a well-structured class can make.

Ten years of regular training is about right for a black belt. Not coincidentally, ten years is also the length of time it generally takes to master anything.
