Fan-made sequels generally don't hold much interest to me.

An analogy: I wouldn't care much for a fan-made follow up album to, say, a Metallica or Tool album.

When it comes to a series like Castlevania, Metroid or Final Fantasy, sure, part of what I like are the series mainstays. But recreating those is not enough to make an entry in that series good. What makes the difference between the good and bad entries are the people behind it. Much as I'm interested in anything Metallica or Tool do, I'm interested in the games made by the people behind the games I like.

Fan-made sequels hold a tremendous amount of interest for me. Thus far, I have never been able to play one because the publishers immediately drop the heavy hammer on their fans the second their enthusiasm for something like this manifests as an actual project. So I meet these things somewhat glumly when they come along.

Ignoring legal issues, I don't like fan made sequels because it looks like 99% of the time they're just attempting to leverage some household name to hide an otherwise terrible game. In the rare case where you've a game that could've stand on its own and serves more as a tribute than juts a ripoff, those are okay, but I can't think of any meaningful example of such a thing.

And of course there is still the legal issue, though if the game is actually good, that implies you should be able to come up with your own IP too instead of just borrowing them. And in such a case these guys would've been better off to make an original game to begin with.

I'm not sure what you're getting at - Portal wasn't a fan made game.

That being said, WTB fan-made Sonic game that doesn't suck. :P

Well, more specifically "Narbacular Drop". The concept was so good, Valve had hired most of the team to develop Portal.

Damn, that looks sweet. Almost better than the official Starfox games in some ways, though not done. It'll be a shame if (probably when, given Nintendo) their years of work are buried alive by corporate hellhounds.

MUUCH different when you're talking about a game vs music. It can look and even play the same as if it's NOT (edited) made by the original team (or even better) if in the hands of the right developer. A Metallica song by someone else will always sound different.

Exactly, it's the people behind it that make it great. If the people behind it are talented and passionate, there's a possibility it could be great. With fan-made stuff, there's always the passion. It's the talent that we're waiting to see if it's there.

I like fan-made stuff because sometimes you find some really talented people who aren't officially working for a studio.

Plus, when someone is developing a game as a fan then you know that they are passionate about the project. That can't always be said about a game developed by an official studio.

Yeah, there'll be a lot of crap, but that just means you sift it for the gold. :)

I think he's saying that the people who made Narbacular Drop were just a bunch of fans, and their work was good enough to be hired on for portal? I dunno.

Wasn't Counter Strike just a fan mod of Half Life?
