How do you even enforce something like this? Like, does a cop pull you over if they see you looking down while you drive? Does he then ask to see your cell phone and check if you sent a text in the last 5 minutes? Seriously.

I would imagine people would just obey it because it's the law. There will be people who won't: and if they cause an accident of any sort, and are proven to have beeen driving while texting, the charges against them will be much stiffer now.

I was driving to work and I noticed somebody swerving in the left lane. I thought that may this person had a bit too much to drink last night and still had some alcohol in his/her system. Instead, I see some girl staring at a phone, trying to text somebody.

Also, not all laws are on the books to be enforced by themselves. If you get into an accident while texting, they can then also charge you with texting while driving.

It's extremely easy to tell when someone is either talking on the phone or texting while driving just by watching them drive. I hope to hell people get severely punished for both 'cause they are usually very negatively affecting those around them while they're doing this

I don't see this law being something someone gets pulled over for often... but more to place blame and further penalty on anyone involved in an accident where it is later found they were texting.

You pull out into an intersection and get T-boned by someone else, a witness mentions they saw the person not paying attention, cops pull cell phone records and find them texting moments before the accident. They are put at fault and also found breaking this texting law.

i almost don't understand texting, period. you have a phone. you could actually talk to the person in question, but instead, let's punch in a bunch of letters on some device that, no matter what it is, is probably inferior to a genuine computer keyboard in some way. as for texting while driving, that is just ridiculous and horrendously dangerous. i don't have a problem with handsfree talking on a bluetooth set, but otherwise, hands ought to be on the wheel.

Texting is asynchronous. Also, people are sometimes in noisy places like bars when you just need simple information like time and place to meet.

yes, if it was used primarily in that way i would not say anything. that's a good reason to use text. most times that i have been texted, however, have not been because of one of those two reasons.

I hate having to stop everything im doing for a phone call, calling is too attention intensive sometimes. I can text a friend what he is up to tonight while watching tv and making dinner at the same time and/or having multiple conversations with different people.

Its a product of the ADD age we live in. Get with the program.
