Sorry about that. I was trying to start fresh from the "Perils of home buying" thread I started months ago.
Title's fixed.

No worries...I was mostly joking.

And what do you mean "rip-off show", Zeus?

Google the anime BlackJack (the original series of 6 episodes, not the one-off movie). House is basically an Americanized version of that.

12 seconds later.....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Jack_(manga) <-- you have to copy and paste since the _(manga) is part of the link; I couldn't get it to work with a href either

Sorry, OAVs, not eps

Oh, anime. Didn't see that. And on that note, trying to compare a live TV show to anime is really apples and oranges. It's not like House can pull out a 10,000 Gigawatt MRI of DOOOOOOM, or anything.

Watch/read BlackJack sometime (it's excellent, I highly recommend the OAVs). House is basically an American sitcom version of it

Wikipedia wrote:However, Tezuka chose to generally eschew medical plausibility in his manga: Black Jack is superhuman, regularly performing spectacular and impossible feats of surgical virtuosity, such as operating in absolute darkness completely from memory, and transplanting body parts without any risk of rejection. (However, rejection is accounted for in some anime episodes.) The Black Jack stories also frequently include pseudoscience and science fiction elements.

...

Pinoko (ピノコ?) is Black Jack's sidekick, a little girl constructed by him who is actually a Teratogenous Cystoma (a sort of tumor also known as a teratoma). As seen in "Teratogenous Cystoma", she was a rare type of parasitic twin, living in one of Black Jack's patients' bodies for eighteen years until Black Jack extracted her and gave her a real body, a plastic exo-skeleton that gives her the aspect of a normal little girl.
Yeah....EXACTLY like House, right?

It is an anime after all, so it's going to be over-the-top. That's the "Americanized TV sitcom version" part. Watch the anime then you'll see. You'll also be treating yourself to an excellent anime

House isn't "an Americanized TV sitcom," though. It sounds like what the two shows have in common is a doctor who's good at diagnosing medical problems. That doesn't sound like enough to say one is a transformation of the other.

I've seen both (albeit only three episodes of Blackjack) and other than both of them giving out diagnoses they're hardly similar. The very feeling of the series are completely different. While House isn't hardly completely accurate, it at least has never made anything up medicine-wise.

Blackjack also doesn't have Jennifer Morrison and Olivia Wilde.

An "Americanized TV sitcom" ?? House was the most watched TV show in the WORLD in 2008, biatch, show it some respect. It's also a drama, not a sitcom.

How old's the anime? I see the manga was written in the 70's but I can't stand any anime drawn before the 90's

I've only seen the commercials and one (very excruciating) episode, but the similarities that I saw are:

- both are genius doctors
- both are a bit "full of themselves"
- both have to deal with "odd" medical problems which only they seem to be able to solve

Very similar premises, one being done anime-style, one American-style

A show is more than its premise. Other than those basics, it sounds like they don't have much in common. It doesn't take long to come up with "genius, misanthropic doctor." The hard part is making it work. I doubt the people behind House were inspired by the anime.

Edit, from IMDB:
  • The show was inspired by The Diagnosis Column in the New York Times Magazine which spotlights unusual medical cases. Executive Producer Paul Attanasio came up with the concept and pitched it to the networks as a medical procedural. Creator David Shore revised the idea into a character drama where the medical cases became the instrument instead of the focus of the storytelling.
  • Dr. Gregory House was based on Sherlock Holmes... but Holmes, in turn, was based on a Doctor that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle knew while studying medicine, a Dr. Bell, whose specialty was diagnosis.

Also, that's a bit vague. That describes at least part of pretty much every medical drama. And what is this American-style? Even if you think it's shitty television, bad programming isn't exactly a monopoly by the United States.

I want to be the one who comes up with the absurd medical shit they have to solve on these shows.

There are some medical inaccuracies in the show, like a few characters that do everything (which is more of a plot device that people just accept), and shocking a flatline (which is a VERY COMMON but completely inaccurate TV myth). However, as this doctor can attest to, House as a whole is fairly accurate medicine.

It's certainly better than "Creating a GUI interface in Visual Basic to track an IP address" CSI.

On the subject of Tezuka's work, two bits:

1. Anyone seen the Astro Boy trailer? Eh? It looks pretty damn good. I never got TOO into Astro Boy, but I know enough to see that they are emulating the visual style really well. I'm pretty pumped.

2. Anyone ever read Tezuka's "Buddha" biography? An EPIC 8-part series of huge volumes detailing the life of Siddharta Guatama (sic) AKA Buddha, from birth to death, filtering in various mythological and historical figures into the story, peppering it with anacronistic humor and pop culture references, and drawn in Tezuka's signature style, it is probably one of the most entertaining biopics you will ever read, and it treats the subject matter reverently without being too preachy. Truly well done, truly worth any comic fan's attention.

Yeah, this is what I would have linked if I had it on hand. Tessian linked me to it a year or so ago. Pretty interesting.
