In the US - and Canada, by extension - the ISPs are maximizing numbers of users, providing minimal service in comparison to the majority of the rest of the civilized world, charging more than many of those other nations providing far superior service, and the people here just sit there and take it, happily paying these companies and being more than content with what they have as they mostly don't know better? It's so unlike the corporations here to do so and the governments to let them get away with it. It's fucking SHOCKING!!!!

I wouldn't lump us in with the US, Canada ranks 8th for Internet speeds. The phone companies here for the past 2 years have been on a quest to get fiber connections up everywhere; they had a 10 year goal.Zeus wrote:What? In the US - and Canada, by extension

Sure, we may have the 8th fastest but look at how bad we are when it comes to the price for the speed. Only the UK and Spain out of all the other "big" nations pay more per mbit of service. There's a little bit more to it than "the US sucks"... anyone else notice that the top countries are all tiny? It's a lot easier to upgrade your infrastructure when you don't have nearly as much land mass to pull it across, so I have to cut us at least a little slack. The US has the most people spread out across the most area with I would assume one of the highest demands for internet.
It's not an excuse for all of it, but it definitely plays a big part.

Oh, for sure that's a factor......at least it was at one point. In Canada, aside from some very rural areas, our telecom companies completed their upgrades to a fiber-op infrastructure that can handle WAAAAAAY more service than what we get currently.
