Well, it looks like it's going to happen if this propaganda website set up by all of the providers not named Bell, Telus, Rogers, and Cogeco is right

http://www.consumersforinternetcompetition.com/

I don't agree with a lot of the in-your-face PR they're shoving at you, but it doesn't surprise me that the worst and most corrupt regulatory body in North America, the CRTC, is trying to eliminate competition. They have a history of it.

I signed the petition. I hope to hell this isn't true. We're already getting screwed as it is

Didn't I hear something about this on Slashdot not too long ago? Some ruling that basically would let the large Telco's you list do whatever they wanted to the smaller guys (probably the ones listed on that website)...

Actually yeah, now that I read the website further-- it's an issue with the big telco's that own the infrastructure being allowed to set whatever price they want when leasing it out to other ISPs. Kind of a sick idea... what other industry lets the largest companies set the prices for their own competitors?

Try and tell me that broadband isn't an essential service now. I know for a fact that the one company I worked for (one of the largest 50 companies in the world) wouldn't function without it. Not to mention a huge number of people bank that way. It's ALMOST as important phone service, but not quite.
