  • Uncharted 2 multiplayer

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

Tried out a couple different modes the last couple of days. Here are the impressions:

1) Co-op Objective

This is their fancy way of saying "multi with a point" or "multi, not deathmatch". There is an Annex-style game, Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, etc. Relatively standard-fare done Uncharted-style

Basically, Uncharted competitive multi plays like Halo but in 3rd person. It has a dash of Gears in it in that you can hide as well. But it really plays much more like a Halo clone, pretty much the way you would expect it to if you played the first. Just with constant action and VERY fast deaths. Not my cup of tea, I prefer the Gears-style where it's not run and gun.

It's not bad for what it is and there's quite a bit of variety of game types. The levels are designed to be climbed upon as well so there's that element that's missing from most FPS run and gun games. If you like that type of multi, you'll probably like this one.

2) Co-op Missions

Included in the game are 3 co-op missions where you work your way through a level to get to a treasure. They're set up with checkpoints, mini-bosses, and a big battle at the end (well, the first one that I played was). They're scripted and are basically missions set in parts of the levels of the game since you're able to play co-op throughout. You get 3 "continues" which you use when both of you are incapacitated/dead.

That's where a new element comes into the series: downed teammate to recover. This is pretty much what it sounds like, their take on the Gears system. The only difference is you have to hold down the button to recover the person (the longer they're down and the harder they're hit, the longer it takes to recover them). Even if they're nearly all the way down, it only takes a couple of seconds so it's no longer than the animation to help a teammate up during Gears. It's a great addition to this mode as it would be IRRITATING to just die and have to start over instantly.

Another thing they added was incapacitation. There are guys who will jump you and you have to come to the aid of your partner and free them (usually they're holding you down). There's a blue gauge that indicates how long it is before your partner is killed. When you free them, you automatically kill the enemy.

I liked this mode, it's an excellent addition. I ran through the first one with a bud of mine tonight and got right to the end when we were surrounded and horded by the enemy. I would liked to have beaten it but alas, that will have to wait until tomorrow. I got disconnected and my teething son woke up so I stopped. I highly recommend going through these missions if you get the game, they're quite fun.

Overall, the multi is a nice addition to the game, even if it's not my cup of tea. The original really suffered from ZERO replay value and now you at least have some. It plays very smooth with only occasional slowdown (when A LOT is happening). There's a ton of modes, even a Survival mode which is their version of Horde mode in Gears. So even for someone like me who doesn't like this style of multi or even the combat engine, there's something to do for at least a little but.

You definitely notice that there's lots of Gears and even L4D influences in this game. At least they learned from the best.

Yeah, the co-op is a ton of fun. We just found out today that you could have more than 2 people. It makes it A TON easier, too. They don't seem to be balanced overly well for just two people.

You actually joined us for the third and final mission. We were just finishing off the second one when you messaged me. Once you get used to the gameplay (took us last night of fiddling around in the first mission; neither of us had played single-player yet and I did about an hour of run-and-gun multi before yesterday) they're not so bad on easy. Even with the restart and disconnect on the last one we ended up doing all three of them in about 2 1/2 hours.

Try the first two, they're pretty good as well. Similar type of "last stand" set-up at the end L4D-style. It's too bad there's only three of them. I smell some DLC in that game's future.

BTW, what happened to your mic after we reconnected? Got sick of my voice that fast, huh? :-)

I have issues where I cannot connect to one friend of mine if I'm using my router, but I can connect to everyone else fine. If I connect without my router, I can connect to the one friend and everyone else. It's annoying.

My friend has an issue with his router and XBL. Every time I play a game with him online we get disconnect a lot. We've learned to save a lot in Marvel Ultimate Alliance because of it :-)
