Maternity leave is pnly like 3 months! Then a 3 month extension but at like half pay, or something, if you choose.

We get FMLA coverage which is only 90 days. BUT..I used all that up while on bedrest. So I dont even get 90 days after he was born. I only get what my recovery length would be from the Csection which is 8 weeks.. If I had had a normal delivery it would have only been 6 weeks.

It sucks. But I do want to go back to work, I just do NOT want to leave Sebastian!

In Canada, you get the employment insurance equivalent for a full year. My wife is going back to work in two weeks, just after my kids turn 1.

They were even trying to extend it to 2 years believe it or not

To be fair, you have had the longest maternity leave I've ever seen in the US... just that you timed it poorly and the kid didn't come out until the end

Think of it this way though -- at least he's going to be able to spend more quality time with extended family. He'll be able to grow up with that. Sine and I never had that opportunity. =P

It happens sometimes when there are complications. If I hadn't been taken off work, it may not have gone as well as it did.

Up here, the OB put my wife under house arrest for the last 8 weeks prior to the birth of the twins against her very wishes. She was considered high risk due to the fact it was her first pregnancy and she had twins. He basically told her she had 2 choices: a) willingly stay at home and relax or b) she can spend the days leading up to her delivery in a hospital where she would have no choice but to relax.

And here's the real kicker to you US mothers: those 8 weeks didn't count towards her maternity leave. We actually got totally different monetary support (called Medical EI) for those 8 weeks THEN her full 1 year of maternity kicked in. So she was basically off for 1 year and 2 months.

It seems like such an enormous burden but really, it's just something most people accept up here. It's actually a good thing and most people - even soulless business managers - recognize that it's good....or at least that it's bad to even have the hint either within or outside of your company that you may be prejudicial that way. Considering that contract work is such a big thing nowadays, at least up here, it's not that hard to get some backfilling on roles if required.

Most business here can't live with 3 months. People have been fired because they were pregnant. (I know somebody personally who that has happened to.)
