Found another phishing site on my server as root. Removed it, but I still need to do something about it permanently. Their "solution" is to move to a new VPS and migrate there, but frankly, I'm tired of their service. The compromise wasn't a password attack, so it's something with one of the services. I thought they were in charge of package updates, anyway, but I'm not sure. Even if I was, I hate Redhat, and apparently, the up2date software is fucked up, or not working as expected.

GeekStorage has VPSs for $35/mo and I get a choice of Linux distros, so I'll choose Debian. Aptitude/apt-get makes all other distros its bitch. I'll eventually have to cut things over. I haven't bought anything yet, but I plan on signing up this week. I haven't done anything like this in at least 5 years, so it's time for a clean server, anyway.

Shit, I'd love to change to a new BB while I'm at it. I fucking hate phpBB now, though I'm really used to the colorization mod I did for it, so I hate to get rid of it. Any BBs have that option?

I don't know, but I wouldn't mind a change, either.

I don't wanna go back to the old multithreaded boards, though - others can cast votes differently, if you do decide to change, but I just feel like the longer post length enables more involved discussion, and we manage to mostly stay on top of each other's responses in a single-threaded format.

Sine,

Might want to check out http://www.redplaid.com/ also. See if that is something you are interested in.

I'd be happy with an update to a newer version of phpBB.

Change would be nice, as would a new BB code.

And Sine, btw-- Ubuntu also uses apt-get which I'd recommend over Debian.

For a desktop, yeah, but not for a server. It's not like I'm running X on the thing.

Quite a few servers I run at work are on Hardened Ubuntu Server builds and I've been quite happy with them. Actually wasn't even my choice; they are both appliances that came from the vendor that way.

For a forum upgrade. I would have two improvement suggestions:

Imbedded youtube videos
Also the ability to cut and paste formated pages from xls spreadsheets and other previously formatted documents (is this possible on any free/inexpensive forum types yet?)

What does it add?

I'm not sure we need any additional functionality. A change is fun for the sake of change... but dont force anything as this board is def not broke and doesnt need fixing. I think it looks its best ever.

Later versions allow users to disable viewing signatures. Right now, it's a forum-wide, admin option only.

It should also fix some of the occasional bugs we run into, like malformed URL tags hosing a thread.

Quick reply alone makes me want an upgrade.

QR would be a nice additional feature. PHP3 looks like it is leaps and bounds ahead of 2. Not only that but they did away with MSAccess!

Huh? I'm using MySQL. Why the hell would you use MSAccess?

Wow, this covers a good part of my wishlist that I made a while back. After I install it, I'll have to figure out what is missing and maybe put in feature requests. If I have time, I might even tackle those feature requests.

Yeah, seems to be a worthy upgrade.

The new features actually look pretty sweet. I don't mind if we lose some formatting, that can always be edited later-- just don't forget to save your code beforehand :P

I agree with "don't force anything". This board works. Don't work too hard, Sine, though I am down with whatever changes you feel would spice things up.

Oh, can we get message tags (ie. Spoiler Alert) back with the new board?

I'm considering VPSLink. They are cheaper, and GeekStorage does not have Debian 5.0. No Debian 5.0. I'm pissed about that, because Debian 4.x is EoL by Feb 2010, and 5.x was released in Feb 2009. They have no excuse to not provide a up-to-date OS, especially for a public web server.

I'm still a bit leery about certain reviews on VPSLink and the unfriendly AUP.

I'm saying it is a good thing that they did.
