Will Peter Jackson be able to challenge James Cameron's throne in terms of box office sales?

James Cameron is King and is way ahead of Peter Jackson.

With Return of the King at over 1.1 billion which followed two previous movies in the trilogy which also hit almost a billion each, it's clear Tolkien and Peter Jackson have some serious market power. The market for blockbusters may have expanded in value since that time period. This week, in only its third week, the alltime third ranked movie at 1.075 billion 'Avatar' will surpass that; and at the slow rate of decline in sales performance, is the first movie to challenge the high #1 spot of Titanic (also by James Cameron).

James Cameron promised that Avatar would revolutionize special effects in the movie industry the way that Terminator 2 did, and shock the sales charts in the way Titanic did. I do know that many people thought this to be insane and that Cameron might have lost it. He has proved those critics wrong on both accounts as it is clear that Avatar has brought Special Effects to a whole new level, and it is clear that this one is selling at an insane pace.

The question is, will The Hobbit be able to do that. Will Peter Jackson's return to Middle Earth in two of the most anticipated movies of all time be enough challenge James Cameron's throne as King of the World (now 'King of the Universe' as BBC has dubbed him).

Actually, now it is Sir Peter Jackson, as Peter Jackson has just been Knighted.

Terminator, Terminator 2, and Aliens didn't do as well as any of the LOTR movies, actually. Titanic and Avatar are the box office sales for the Hobbit movies to attempt to surpass.

Love her or hate her (I'm ambivalent), that woman is talented as fuck. You know she did that song in 1 take? Saw it on the Titanic extras. That's incredible.

Well, on both counts, that makes two of us here.

I voted Peter Jackson on grounds of the multi-billion dollar DVD sales of LOTR and the upcoming Bluray which will fuel the hype machine; and likely pimp sites like torn which was instrumental in spreading hype for the LOTR movies. If the Hobbot movies do 50% better than Return, then that will be two movies that will compete. Beating a billion in two weeks is only something a Tolkien movie could do; presently and in my opinion.
