By New Super Mario Brothers Wii, which sold 10 million copies in 8 weeks.

While not as impressive as the film Avatar (which looks like it might top the once thought insurmountable sales of Titanic within 5 or 6 weeks) it is selling at a similar type pace. New Super Mario Brothers Wii was the top selling game for all weeks of the holiday season save one, and that was the week that Final Fantasy 13 debuted in Japan, just barely edging out New Super Mario Brothers by a less than 1% margin.
Interesting as well, New Super Mario Brothers; which is the first true 2D Super Mario game since Super Mario World on SNES (the DS one was actually not designed by Shigeru Miyamoto while the Wii version was); has also surpassed Mario Galaxy, and will soon surpass Mario 64 knowing the legs this game has. I would use this as evidence that people still see the 2D Super Mario Brothers as Nintendo's true flagship series; not just any old Mario game no matter how high the praise.
-------
What I hope, is that with Nintendo's next console, that they create a 2D Mario game even more robust in options, and perhaps launch it as a packin with a new generation Wii Sports type title - similar to the Duckhunt-SMB package they had on NES... Also TWO controllers instead of just one =)
