Sine raggin' on a Nintendo system? Would never have seen that comin' ;-)
Don't get me wrong. I think Nintendo is doing great with the DS. I'm more like ragging on the 3D technology. It will be cool for the next year or so, and then people will get bored with it. This is the 1950's all over again. It's not like you have holograms yet, so eventually nobody will care.
The DS is great 'cause of the way in which it's used. I honestly thought it would be a fad when I played it at E3 (2004) but they've done such a good job in a lot (not all) of case in ensuring the touch-screen is done well and make sense. And I'm not talking about just Nintendo here. If anything, it's been the third parties who have done the best jobs with games like Pac Pix and Drawn to Life. On top of that it's cheap to develop for so we're getting a shitton of stuff that would never see the light of day on the consoles (well, maybe Wii, it follows a similar business model) and it's basically become a portable SNES 2 with all the remakes and similar titles. It truly is the system that absolutely anyone can play.
That being said, I'm not sure how 3D/hologram graphics on its own will be any sort of innovation that'll be exploited. But other than the Virtual Boy, Nintendo's proven everyone wrong for 20 years in the handheld market (the original GB was a calculator, the other iterations were far less powerful than the competition or didn't do anythign new, the DS was a fad, etc.), we really should just have faith in them when it comes to handhelds unless we're finally proven otherwise.
