Idea for sports game

Why not have a mode where you play as a ref and try to rig the game in question for your team's favor? I think most recent sports game have a gazillion modes anyway and they always need a reason to justify for the latest sports game year+1 game, so that seems like something to do. It can be like Dynasty Warrior where the game is setup that your side is guaranteed to lose if you didn't do something, and you have to try to do it in a way that's not totally obvious or you might get exposed.

It's a cool idea, but it has a lot of roadblocks. In the west almost all sports titles are licensed; it would be almost impossible to get certification. Though this has been a feature in some games since the N64/PSX era, the only western publisher I can think of who has allowed this is THQ.

I thought most sports league has exclusive deal which means if you're not with them you can't possibly get the team name anyway, so all except the guys who already have a deal are stuck using generic team names anyway and then wouldn't need certification.

Who would play this? The guys who play NFL Blitz or NBA Jam? There's stuff like create your own player or franchise mode where you're playing the franchise owner, so obviously it's not necessary you have to play a player.

You might even make it something like the Star Wars where you could have a good ref or a bad ref!

Yeah, but refs don't really appeal to anyone. Sports fans and players want to play the game, some more meticulous guys want to do the coaching/GM stuff, hence those simulations. But who wants to play as the ref? The best thing a ref can do is disappear, not exactly a great basis for a game

There are sports game where you play as scouts or do drills to skill up your stuff. Obviously this wouldn't be a main mode of play but since they always need to add something to justify why you should spend another $50 for updated rosters, it seems like an easy way to get another year of stuff out without doing much. If you played say, NFL Blitz, that's obviously nothing like actual football but it's still fun in its own way.

I don't think it would work as a basis for an entire game, but as a mode in an existing sports game, it sounds like it could be fun.

I'll go with that. As a secondary mode in an existing game, it could be neat if done properly (not sure what the mechanics would be, really). But a whole game dedicated to that? I just don't how a) it's possible and b) it would appeal to a big enough audience to be worth it.

I was reading people would play say like a franchise mode in a baseball game and pick the Yankees and spend $200 million buying every good player in the entire league and then go on to win with some absolutely ridiculous record. So if people find these kind of stuff fun what's the difference from rigging a game so you can win as opposed to buying the league?

So if people find these kind of stuff fun what's the difference from rigging a game so you can win as opposed to buying the league?

I'd actually love to see a baseball GM/manager simulator where you could be the Yankees and spend $200M and lose. If done properly, that would absolutely rule and be as close to real life as possible (considering it was 10 years between championships for the Yankees)

Pretty sure that kind of game already exists since every sports game need to have a lot of modes to justify keep on spending $50 every year for essentially the same thing. Well I think people not only spend crazy amounts of money that you wouldn't even have in real life, but with the ability to save/load you can probably just keep at it until someone trades you their best player for nothing. It's sort of like playing monopoly against the computer and just keep on offer Baltic Ave for Broadwalk and eventually they'll accept. And unlike monopoly, if it's supposed to simulate real life you will have computer making these trades to simulate a salary dump which happens all the time in real life.

Blitzball had a simulation aspect, and all you have to do is sign Wedge, wait until Al Bhed stop resigning their goalie (best in the game) for no reason whatsoever and then you'd have some kind of invinicible team because nobody can possibly score on him. And it's actually kind of fun for these whacky trades to happen, and it's pretty much rigging the game anyway but rigging the game can be fun.
