I think a while ago Zeus had some post about how in hockey there was this team that seems to just pass the puck back and forth forever and managed to win the Stanley Cup like that. I started thinking what are some strategy that you'd probably do in games, but might actually work in real life? And if so, what would be the ramification of it?
The first one I can think of is always going on the 4th down and short(ish). I'm not a big football fan but I know there are statistics that suggests this might be a good idea over the long run, and if that turns out to be correct then this would be a good strategy. I'm not sure what would happen if someone actually try this and managed to do so successfully.
Another thing I thought of is in basketball, maybe you should never take a long 2 jumper. Most of the time I see a guy take a step forward from the 3 point line and then shoot, but NBA defenders are usually pretty good so it's not like you're getting a completely uncontested shot, and at any rate as long as you're shooting percentage for a contested 3 is better than an uncontested long 2 * 1.5, it'd still be better to take the 3. Studies have shown that taking more 3 pointers tend to improve a team's record regardless of whether they're good at 3-point shooting. I suspect this is because if you didn't throw up so many 3s you'd just throw up some bad 2s, but a bad 3 is better than a bad 2 since it's worth 50% more points. I'm not sure what would happen if you just get a game where people only shoot 3s for long range shooting. Maybe it'll lead to the 3 pointer being move even further so it's not always advantageous to take one.
