Not wasting time on games you find marginal is all well and fine, but then you're really only standing on the legs of reviewers and have no clue whether or not the game is actually, as you say, marginal. That's really my point, is that if people have enough time to come on here and debate the game, then they must not fall into that category.

Differing tastes is fine. That doesn't necessitate the venom filled 2\10s. I didn't like Borderlands, but that doesn't mean I'd give it a 2.

I see what you're saying but we're not exactly pouring tens of minutes into these posts.

Well everyone but Don. Well you'll see.

Nuke Dukem always struck me something like Megaman or any cult status series where if you're not part with them you're against them, and it's pretty much irreconciliable. It's sort of like you'd not try to sell GTA to Japanese or a dating sim to Americans and there really isn't much point to convince the other side why they should play this game.

I think people play less games now not necessarily because they're older but that games in general are taking a lot longer compared to when you're young. If you play 3 lousy games a month, back in the SNES era 20 hours is enough to cover all 3, but now you might need 100 hours, so you'll be less inclined to play a random game. If I recommend Shining Force Neo to you, a pretty generic game in terms of length, you'll have to take it on faith that hitting the 'X' button repeatedly for 30 hours is supposed to be worth it. Understandably most people don't have that kind of time to waste just from a recommendation online.

I'm also saying that if a person hasn't played the game, then they shouldn't really have any input on it's quality. But everyone must have played DNF because everyone has an opinion on it.

Also Kupek, I meant to congratulate you on your manliness. I certainly can imagine how much better it must feel to kick ass in real life instead of through an avatar.

I guess that depends on if you are easily annoyed in real life.

Pffft...real men play MTGO. Planeswalkers is MTG:Carebears Edition. No deck building = no fun.

I wish they would spend all of that time and energy making a DotP-like engine for MTGO.

I 100% agree that the biggest problem is no deck building, but there is definitely appeal to learning what decks\cards the game has and being able to plan accordingly for that in online play.

And for those that enjoy that style of online card-play: http://www.pokemontcg.com/

LordPixie (tess and I's friend) and I have been messing around on it in single player again here and there. Been trying to tempt Tessian into reinstalling it, but the problem with Borderlands is you need hours at a time with it to get any where.

Game companies would love it if people actually believe you shouldn't have any input or an opinion of the game without playing it. Even if you don't care about the cost of the money (or pirate it), the time-cost is not insignificant. It's akin to something you shouldn't have input on FF14 when it's only the worst rated MMORPG in history if you didn't play it, even though the problems in it are so rampant that you can see what's wrong with the game from just a few gameplay videos.

At any rate Duke Nukem seems to be something that sells to people who already like it with no real attempt to expand its base, so either you already like the game or you don't.

Something about accountants and Duke Nukem. Back in the Duke 3D days my CPA and I would play over dialup :D

I have a soft spot for Duke, so I actually have been enjoying it. Is it the best game I've played in years? No, but nostalgia can go a long way. Look at nintendo shoveling it on year after year :bully:

Haha, then Sine went through great lengths to make a fake facebook for you and photoshop pictures of a kiddo and everything! I wouldnt put it past the crazy bastard.

I beat the game on normal and had fun doing it. The levels are varied, the blowing up is fun, and some bosses/particular fights are hard as crap where you die a lot. I was getting classic game rage on quite a few areas. I messed around with multi a little yesterday and it was fun, too, for a 30 minute mindless deathmatch. I've put in about 20 hours and that already is worth my $45.

It's true, I don't, and I don't... much.

Dead Space 2 was fantastic for the most part. I felt a bit like I had felt like in the first game however, that the latter half of the game dragged. I kept expecting it to be over, but it kept going and going. The ending was very cool, though. That series has some of the best scripted sequences of any, and the general pacing of the game (with the exception of the aforementioned draggy portion) is excellent. Great sound design, death animations, voice acting, etc., etc., etc...

LA Noire was cool too. Those are the only two games I've played in the past few months.

What? Duke Nukem thread? Ah fuck it.

So I played through and beat all of Duke Nukem Forever...and thankfully I ignored the Duke-bashing 'cause this was a pretty fun game. If you're a critic and you're sitting down to analyze this game, there's tons of flaws to point out. The graphics appear to be first-gen Xbox (I imagine the engine is the same as it was for Prey), there's a very small variety of weapons (can't be more than 12 or so total, and that includes explosives and turrets), and the storyline is pretty minimal and basic. The game really does feel like a relic from the 90s, which is really the core of it's "problems". I put that in quotes because I really don't see it as big a problem as the detractors seem to.

There's something to be said for a game that's just "fun" and Duke is really tons of fun. What this game does really well is level design and scripting (ie. where and how you fight your battles; there are puzzles in this game, it's not just 100% shooting), including the bosses which I enjoyed, the balancing in the weapons (all of them are useful, it's a matter of taste), and the personality of Duke and his world. But you really have to like the extremely over-the-top machismo of the main character and the fact that he's pretty much a demigod in his world because of it (his "shield" is called Ego for cryin' out loud). If you don't find that entertaining and even comical, don't play the game 'cause for the entire 12 or so hours you're playing it (on Hard), you're gonna get it thrown at you much more than you think. Watch the videos, they give you a decent glimpse of what's to come.

That being said, I personally rate this game around a 7 or 7.5 with my personal bias bring it up to an 8 experience for me. I think it would be a fine $30 buy for most people (it's already down to $40 up here, so that should be very soon). But you really, really have to enjoy a very old-school feeling shooter that's all about personality, level design, and just plain fun with 5 year-old graphics, little storyline, and few weapons. If you can't enjoy that, don't play it. But if you can, this game can be just pure, unadulterated fun. I'm personally OK with a game with flaws and is about just tons of fun, but I can see why it gets bashed.

Steam had it for $25 yesterday and I considered it since I've read more about the game but I'm still not very interested. I'll watch for what they do with it in the next iteration with more anticipation.

I assure you that another one will get made. Duke is still a large name and this is just a polished off turd from the 3d realms guys or whomever was making it originally.

It actually sold well, just not as well as they thought it would (or for as long). The game definitely didn't bomb, and 2K has already stated that Duke is going to be a recurring franchise for them.

For the couple hours I've put into the game (got it for $40 for 360), it's not too bad. It's enjoyable for the most part, but we'll see how long I feel that way.

I'm just disappointed that all they tried to do was make a "better" Duke Nukem 3D. They didn't evolve the series at all. Just going through the game and noticing all the missed opportunities as far as world interaction, weapons, combat... bit disappointing.

I'll see how the rest of the game turns out.

Well, a little over 370k units in the first month

Not phenomenal, but not a bomb (like Shadows of the Damned or Child of Eden). Let's cross our fingers for a sequel

That is also only for physical copies. I would love to see some digital figures.

I have a friend who even bought it through OnLive. :D
