Apparently I missed this a few years back in the list of historical fictional games. Actually I read about it but I have been burned by Capcom on Megaman X8 so I didn't think they'd be able to come up with something interesting especially when there's the known Dynasty/Samurai Warriors to stick with.

This stuff is way crazier than anything from the Warriors series, which is probably good since unless you're a historical buff you probably didn't play them for historical accuracy. The gameplay looks pretty much identical to the Warriors series and I guess Capcom got into the scene too late to challenge Koei, but I think Capcom has the right ideas. There's really no difference between say Da Qiao or Xiao Qiao or any of the other 15 female characters in Dynasty Warriors, but these characters in Sengoku Basara are definitely all unique. That's probably why there are only about 10 playable characterse in each game rather than 50.
