Sony has been seeing disastrous financial trouble lately as their credit rating dropped to bbb-, which might be the motivation behind the potential move. Sony recently confirmed that there will be no PS4 at E3 2012, and they re-affirmed their 10 year generation plan earlier this week with the PS3. Sony had initially stated this as justification for investing in a PS3 in its early cycle, but then back-pedaled and stated that they meant they would be only supporting the PS3 for 10 years (until this week).
Another statement from SCE head raised eyebrows when he stated that
The biggest statement comes from from CES when Gaikai's Chief product officer stated "Not all of the current console makers will have one more generation. That will be the big news at E3." We know for a fact it's not Nintendo, and it seems highly unlikely to be Microsoft that is being referred to (since all they need to do for next gen really is to release a next generation Kinect and upgrade their console to a quad core and that will be guaranteed success - whereas the PS Move essentially bombed).
Whether there is any truth to this or not will probably be announced soon. If it is Sony, I can't see them not making a statement before E3 about the future of their home console brand.

While really not that much to think about, in light of the possibility that no PS4 is planned, then it would be true that the Vita would be the only future of the division - and indeed it would logically follow that the division's future rests solely in the hands of the Vita (and to some extent the PS3)."From the SCE perspective, I think a lot rests on the success of PS Vita. We went through a very tough time in the company in getting to a point of profitability, and I think we're now beginning to enjoy the benefits of that – it gives us some more leeway in being able to look at the future and areas of new investment in terms of new business models and new approaches to gaming.
