  • Posting from a Powerbook G4. Rather Nice, I'd say. Superdrive is the sweetness of sweets!

my next computer will be a laptop, thats for sure. Probably not Apple, though. Gateway has a kickass one that has a keypad built in. Before you say it, i've had good experiences with Gateway in the past, so there. :)</div>

<div style='font: 11pt "Fine Hand"; text-align: left; '>Well, I had to take the G4 to the Condo. It's pure bliss to be able to surf while on the couch. Airport thingy will be the next Apple related purchase.</div>

<div style='font: 12pt "Cooper Black"; text-align: left; '>yeah, i bring my Dell home from work some nights so i can surf and watch tv. How sad is it that tv alone isnt enough anymore? or surfing for that matter, heh.</div>

<div style='font: 10pt verdana; text-align: left; padding: 0% 10% 0% 10%; '>That's a hefty 9 pounds. My Dell Inspiron 8500, which has a 15.4 screen, is about 7 pounds. An Apple Powerbook with a 15.2 screen, is about 5.5 pounds. I didn't think it would make that much of a difference, but it does.</div>

<div style='font: 12pt "Cooper Black"; text-align: left; '>yeah, but i'll be looking for a desktop replacement. Portablility isnt that big an issue since i'll just be dragging it from the couch to the computer room and thats it. If i had to take it to class i would agree with you.</div>

<div style='font: 10pt verdana; text-align: left; padding: 0% 10% 0% 10%; '>After having a laptop for a while, I've realized/concluded a few things:<ul><li>Eventually, you <i>will</i> want to be more mobile. I made my apartment wireless because I had this great laptop, but I was still constrained to using it either at my desk, or very close to it. I felt silly. And even though I don't bring my laptop to campus regularly, I find that I'm bringing it with me for group meetings very often, and will use it for presentations.<li>Those few extra pounds make a difference. The guy I'm working with on a group project has a 15 inch PowerBook. Sitting on my couch with my 7 pound Dell feels a lot heaving than sitting on my couch with his 5.5 pound PowerBook in my lap.<li>PowerBooks have the best physical design of any laptop I've seen, hands down. Most PC laptop screens (like mine) don't start until about two inches above the base - that's a lot of wasted space. PowerBook screens have much smaller borders. This fact alone probably cuts down on the size of the machine the most. The screens also attach at the bottom of the base, instead of on top of it. This means the screens can't go all the way down, but I could live with that since again, it cuts down on the size of the machine.<li>When the computer is as close to you as a laptop is, you don't need huge screens. I like my 15.4 screen, although honestly, I'd probably be okay with one a bit smaller.</ul>I know I probably sound like I'm trying to sell you on PowerBooks, but I really do think they're the best laptop out there. Like me, though, you're probably really used to Windows. (I have another reason for wanting a PowerBook - OSX is Unix based, which I'm sure you don't care about.) So I doubt you'd actually decide to change the OS you use. But do I suggest you consider looking at a smaller laptop.</div>

<div style='font: 11pt "Fine Hand"; text-align: left; '>Too bad there's no student discounts for Powerbooks (or any hardware, for that matter). I was able to get the Office Mac at a student discount price. Over 50% off. I'm not even a student. =8^)</div>

<div style='font: 12pt "Cooper Black"; text-align: left; '>In the long run, though, you're right. I'm too used to Windows and other Windows based programs to feel comfortable switching over. More so than myself, my wife wouldnt want to change. She knows how to do what she needs to do on a comp and is not like me where i think it would be fun to learn something new, she would hate having to learn a new OS and i would hear about it everytime she used it.

I'm hoping someday to buy a used mac for cheap just to mess around on it and learn it as i've found that some of our clients use macs and i will have to get used to them, but i still want a fully functional IBM compatable as my main system.

I do agree that their laptops are great looking. My work bought me a widescreen Dell which i think is such a waste, i wish they had given me an allowance and let me order one. I dont need this wide screen, i find that smaller is nicer unless there is a reason. The Gateway is wide screen, but it has a 10 key keypad. That keypad would make life so much easier, i wouldnt have to buy a detached one to work from home. The Dell Inspiron 8600 i use now could fit one if they had thought about it since the wide screen leaves unused space on the bottom on the machine.

I'm still on the fence about it, which doesnt really matter since i wonr be buying one for atleast another 6 months anyways. By that time, i'm sure all sorts of new cool things will be out to make my choice even harder. ^_^</div>

<div style='font: 10pt verdana; text-align: left; padding: 0% 10% 0% 10%; '>To tell you the truth, I'm not as enthusiastic about Apple desktops as I am about their laptops. Sure, I'd love to have one, but I'm not sure I'd buy (for example) a G5 over a PC desktop. I'm just <i>that</i> impressed with the physical design of their laptops.</div>
