I notice this happens in a lot of like martial arts anything (movie, book, manga, whatever), and sometimes even in some conversation online after say you hear about the generic guy with a gun going crazy and shooting a bunch of people. Someone's always going to say guns aren't good at close range combat and you're better off using your fist/nunchakus/swords/fireballs. Now, I'm not a big expert on weapon, but I think the only possible drawback for using a gun at short range is that someone might be able to grab it from you and shoot you with it. As far as I know guns aren't exactly very accurate at long range so being close also means it's way easier for the other guy to shoot you. If your generic massacre guy had a sword instead of a gun, I think 10 guys can probably just bodypile him and overpower him. Even if everyone is too scared to fight him, he can only kill whoever he catches up to so at least everyone else can run away. Historically, there was an Emperor who was also a legendary swordsman in Japan and when he was killed in a coup d'etat it says he'd like kill a few guys with a sword and then the sword would get dull from the usage, but since he's the Emperor has like 10 Masamunes on display so he just gets a new one. Eventually the soldiers figured out they just flip the mattress on the floor and use it like a shield and piled on the Emperor and then killed him, and this guy is supposed to be a legendary swordsman too. You'd think the average guy on a rampage is neither a master swordsman nor is he going to be carrying 10 swords to switch to.

It seems pretty incredible to me that people would even contemplate facing say a sword compared to a gun. I saw a taped recording of some guy with a gun holding up a bunch of guys (he was caught on security camera), and sure enough someone tried the 'attack him from behind by surprise' and the guy with the gun had his gun pointed at the attacker quite comfortably before he get to melee range. He didn't actually shoot the guy because he was only out for getting certain guys (otherwise I doubt they'd show a taped recording of that).
