Just saw an article saying USA women's dominance in basketball is a tribute of Title IX and female rights or something.
I mean, what the heck? Let's assume every nation operated the same as USA in terms of women's basketball. Since USA obviously dominates in men's basketball you'd assume this extends to women's basketball.
However, whereas in most sports USA falls behind compared to a country like China that has government handling the cost of training for unpopular sports, here it's the other way around. In the USA we got the WNBA that is subsidized by the NBA, so that even though the WNBA appears to be never profitable they still can continue playing basketball at a high level. Obviously, no other country has a pro women's league supported by a money making machine that is the NBA. So the nation you'd expect to field the best basketball team also has the most extra advantages (due to the NBA sudsidizing WNBA) totally blows out all competition? Imagine that!
I mean if the NFL subsidized ping pong I wouldn't be surprise if USA turns out to be competitive against China in 10 years, and we're talking about a sports where USA already starts out at #1 in the world here.
