Thought the state of American reality TV was poor in taste?

Meh, I'd watch. Hell, set a sitcom in the period, and run a laugh track.

There's a certain degree to which I agree with you, but they shouldn't pretend it's something it isn't to make themselves and others feel better about what they're doing. I don't believe for a second that children who would be young enough to learn from the show would want to watch this. Reality television is for adults. The stuff with the actor playing the Gestapo or whatever was interesting in how he was relating the role to his children and the child on the show, but I don't really think that that age group would typically pay attention to this at all.

I don't think anyone is going to deny that there's a market for this sort of stuff. Just look at the success of the reality TV shows about child beauty pageants.
