  • Nintendo DS - First impresions

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

<div style='font: 9pt "copperplate gothic light"; text-align: left; '>I finally got my hands on the DS today. Overall I have to say I am nothing but impressed. The chat function worked very well and was very easy to use. When you first start up the system it shows you the health warning for epiliptic seisures. Every time. But all you have to do is touch the screen and its gone. The screens themselves are slightly bigger than a GBA screen, and both are backlit. It does play all GBA games, but only in single player mode. My only really gripe was that going through the system menus on the handheld through the touchscreen was kinda confusing, due to it being entirely icon based, and I couldnt figure out what all of them were. A little play with the system will make it easy to remember tho.

I also got to try out the Metroid Prime Hunters. The control layout I used used the stylus to look around while you moved and strafed with the dpad. Double tap to jump, and l trigger fired the gun. After a few minutes to get used to the controls it was rather fluid, and felt much like I was playing with a mouse. When I first started the demo up, it shows a full rendering of Samus. In motion. I swear to god, I never belived I would ever see anything like that on a handheld, I started drooling immediatly. Also setting up a multiplayer game was very simple to do, me and my co-worker figured it out with relitive ease. It sets up where one system hoasts the game, and other people can join it...I think this will be a great setup considering the systems built in wi-fi setup for wireless multiplay.

Also I gutted a few games for the store...they are about roughly 1 inch square..mabye a bit smaller, and are about an eighth of an inch thick. I was moderatly impressed when I saw that you actually had a slot in the game boxes to store a GBA game as well. Prety slick.

Overall I came away from our demo units rather excited. I cant wait to pick mine up on Sunday.</div>

<div style='font: 11pt ; text-align: left; '>Ahhh ok, cause I need to pick one up from a store that didn't sell preorders. Which means I need to get the jump on the rest of the world Sunday and buy it before I watch the Saints struggle and lose..errr I mean win.</div>

<div style='font: 12pt ; text-align: left; '>Actually, I heard it was Frontlit. So, even better. Anyway, I love mine and have no issues with weight or hand cramping.</div>

<div style='font: 12pt ; text-align: left; '>Nope, I'm completely wrong. Backlit it is. And impossible to see in sunlight. Not like I'd use it on a sunny day though, so no problem.</div>
