  • I am getting close to the end of Suikoden IV.  Defidently a great entry to the series.

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

<div style='font: 9pt "copperplate gothic light"; text-align: left; '>This one takes place 150 years before the first Suikoden. The setting this time is the Island Nations, which is to the south of Harmonia and what is in this time period still the Scarlet Moon Empire. This entry to the series revolves the True Rune of Punishment. The Rune of Punishment grants vast power to its bearer, but every time it is used, it eats at the persons life. Then after it consumes it's current owner, it selects a new one on its own, unlike the other true runes, which are passed on from bearer to bearer. Also due to the time period there are only 3 repeat characters in this game.

Storyline wise the game has been great, easily a contender for the best in the series. As for battles, the buddy system from III is gone, which is quite a relief. You only get a 4 person party in this one instead of 6, but it still works out really well. Also combo attacks must be learned, they arent just automaticly available, which is kinda neat.

As this is in an Island area all tactical battles are navel encounters. While these have been very fun, I have to say all the ones so far have been fairly easy. The interesting thing is the fact that as a last ditch effort you can board an enemy ship. If you do board, you go into a standard battle with the boarding party you assigned to the ship that you are attacking with. As such, sience the enemy will board you as well, you have to keep a decent chunk of your characters leveled up and equiped moderatly well. Fortunatly it is a lot easier to get money in this game, so it isnt too bad.

The dueling engine has been vastly improved. It still functions as the guess his action and attack, guard, or special accordingly, but it is much better animated. For example if you both guard, they will circle each other warily for a while brandishing their weapons. If both sides attack you see them dash forward and lock blades together and push each other back. Its pretty neat.

On a side note any true Suikoden fans will probally be amused to know that one of the stars is Scholteim Reinbach III ^_^

My only gripe on this game is that one or two of the stars were stupid to try to find. Most notably the 3rd mermaid (Lilin I think) who you had to fish up by draging your fishing net from Na-Nal Island to Nay Island. Other than that gameplay, story, and everything else has been great.</div>

<div style='font: 12pt ; text-align: left; '>Also, is it just me, but the True Runes seems lamer and lamer each game? You started with Soul Eater, and then you went to 1/2 of a True Rune (White Shield and Black Sword), and then you went to like 1/5th of a True Rune (True elemental runes) although technically each is a True Rune, but they seem so weak that they might as well be a 1/5th of a Rune, and now you don't even get to live forever for having a Rune (because using it kills you)?</div>

<div style='font: 9pt "copperplate gothic light"; text-align: left; '>The large scale battles are all still there but they are all navel encounters in this one. They are worked very well in my opinion.</div>

<div style='font: 9pt "copperplate gothic light"; text-align: left; '>I personally think the rune of punishment is very interesting. Using it in normal battles doesnt kill you, though it can (the first three level spells are of the do so much damage to your enemys do so much to yourself variety). Also considering the fact that the true runes rule over diffrent aspects of life and this one covers attonement and forgiveness, the fact that it works the way it does is not surprising.</div>

<div style='font: 12pt ; text-align: left; '>It's like they ran out of interesting ideas for True Runes and you've this continual spiral toward uselessness. Back in Suikoden 1, McDohl is the one man army. In Suikoden 2 the rebellion leader is at least pretty good. In S3 whoever your Fire Champion happens to me will just a one shot Final Flame wonder.

As for the 108 stars, there's no way you can find all of them without a guide or spending way more time than you need. Some of the requirements are just downright obscure. Also spending the time finding all the people defeats the purpose of Suikoden being a relatively short game (which was its strength, until S3). I'll suck up with Nanami dying with 2 of my higher Runes because it's simply not worth it to find everyone to keep her alive. Limited time recruit character really sucks too. The one I remember offhand is the blacksmith master guy after you return to Gregminster in S1 because Flik/Victor have to be in the party, and I'm sure there are more.</div>

<div style='font: 10pt "arial narrow"; text-align: left; padding: 0% 5% 0% 5%; '>S3 is very easy when it comes to getting all 108. Most of them you just happen upon. There about 10-15 "hidden" characters that you can pay a certain party member (Kidd the boy detective) to tell you their wherabouts. S3 is the only one I didn't need a guide for.</div>

<div style='font: 9pt "copperplate gothic light"; text-align: left; '>S4 is more or less the same, but one of the obscure ones is admitidly REALLY obscure. But if you are a fan of the series, hunting for the stars doesn't really require a strat guide.</div>

<div style='font: 9pt ; text-align: left; '>If you have an original copy of S2 with the case (you can replace that) and the manual and the disc is in good condition, take care of it, it's worth about $120US</div>

<div style='font: 10pt "EngraversGothic BT", "Copperplate Gothic Light", "Century Gothic"; text-align: left; '>Yeah, plus by the time I got around to reading the FAQ about that, I was already 20 hours into the game, and I missed my chance. I absolutely hate elements in RPGs that you can't go back to.</div>
