The Other Worlds Shrine

Your place for discussion about RPGs, gaming, music, movies, anime, computers, sports, and any other stuff we care to talk about...

  • There was a thing on tv a couple days ago that made me laugh my ass off where they were talking about games

  • Somehow, we still tolerate each other. Eventually this will be the only forum left.

<div style='font: 9pt Arial; text-align: left; '>FPS's don't train you how to use a weapon, but they can desensitize you somewhat. The Marines used Doom as a part of their training a few years ago to condition recruits to react to hostile targets while navigating through simulated battle conditions. Not sure what they're using now, though.

Of course, when a couple of hateful kids with guns becme desensitized, who knows what can potentially happen?</div>

The Marine training was just that: training. It's not a desensitizing course. The military has been using games for years. Remember Battlezone?</div>

<div style='font: 10pt Arial; text-align: left; '>...you get used to it, but I don't think you get "Desensitized". They knew what they were doing when they walked in the door.</div>

<div style='font: 9pt Arial; text-align: left; '>Soldiers who were familiar with games tend to react faster to moving and pop up targets (which in turn leads to less hesitation when shooting people). Keep in mind that this is in conjuction with actual field and weapons training, so I'm not saying that videogames alone causes kids to start riddling their classmates with bullets. But it can make it easier if the kids are already messed up.</div>
