I think there are usually only a few people online at the same time, which is why it never took off.

Personally, I like a message board over real time chat so I can ignore you fools easier if I want.

I'm not talking about htmlspeak, for all of sine's tech wizardry, it was problematic.

i mean like a small integrated java applet or something that just sits at the site or bottom of the window, can be turned off if necessary

The trivia function in the old IRC channel was fun for a while there.

Of course, that was all we did in the chat room, which could help explain why it died so quickly.

what we need is a true integrated java chat applet in a frame on the site. if it's RIGHT THERE the way htmlspeak was but didn't have the refresh problems that htmlspeak did, i think maybe we'll use it.

i'd be willing to do some research into the possibilities. i can also research some good trivia bots too maybe!

That was the only time so far I ever got a laugh out of a trivia channel, during a very brief stint on EsperNet...(the correct answer was shoe)

This keeps getting brought up, and I agree every time, but it always lasts about a week or so before people get bored with it. Reminds me of the IRC server at work. (Gee, I spent about 2-3 weeks setting all the niceities, and nobody uses it, yet the TSRs all want IM.)

I have no interest in something like that. I often post here from the office. I browse the board as a momentary distraction; a chat is more than a momentary distraction.

I think you'd need like a scheduled chat session or something where everyone can just show up for a few hours and then take off. We don't exactly have a large community here, so there's not much point in having a permanent chat feature if it won't be used constantly.

This community isn't large enough to support a dedicated chat room.

You'd have half a dozen idlers commenting only occasionally.

I IRC in a room of about 30-ish and there's still decent gaps of time where nobody's talking.

That was the extent of most HTMLspeak conversations.

I have the experise to upgrade HTMLSpeak to be more interactive and fix the usual problems, but honestly, I don't have the motivation or time, especially when I know it's doomed for failure.
