Jesus, I feel you on that. 1997...when we were young and naive. That guy had too much time on his hands, the voyager space craft comment is absoultely ridiculous, but so true.

During their development, four standard Final Fantasies have come out, and then an online one. Both Half Life games. Quake 2 and 3. Those are the games that put it in the most perspective for me. I have no idea what these guys are doing every day.

I understand that ambitious projects require a lot of time to complete, but when it's taking eight years for a single game, you get to the point that you have to re-evaluate your core technologies so much that real progress is going to be hard.

That's the problem: they keep getting behind on technologies, and then they decide to redo the thing in a new engine. You can't just swap out engines like that and expect everything to work like magic. Now, they are soooo far behind that they are trying to make it the "best ever" just so that these people with high expectations and the naysayers will think that it's worth it.
