Dude, you just totally stole EsquE's list. Well, except for the fact that he might have actual porn movies on his.

Believe it or not, two of those ARE actual porn movies (not counting Debbie Does Dallas, which everyone knows about). I was having a little trouble filling out the list so I looked up some real porn movie titles to throw on there.

I'll try to make this more obscure than just list favorites that everybody has already seen.

1. Battle Royale (Jap)
2. The Jacket
3. Ichi the Killer (Jap)
4. The Holy Mountain (Argentenian, I think. Also the weirdest movie I've ever seen)
5. The Thing
6. The Warriors (Greatest movie ever made)
7. Fantastic Planet
8. Ginger Snaps
9. Revenge of the Nerds
10. Bringing Out the Dead

Believe it or not BL, I have seen almost all of those movies on your list =)

I own the DVD for The Thing and Battle Royale

If you are into movies like that, I suggest checking out Dog Soldiers, it's a relatively obscure movie, English or Scottish, kind of a comedy/action flick along the lines of Carpenter's films.

Seek, where did you get Battle Royal? My Girlfriend and I have been looking for it so she can watch it in japanese, and I get to watch the subs.

I think I bought it locally about 2-3 years ago. When I got it it was like 45 bucks, but I think I saw it on sale recently for about 25 (the version with the silver casing). Yeah, it is a Japanese movie with English subtitles. Should be able to find it in most larger independent stores that sell DVDs, large chains like Futureshop do not carry it, I know that much. Smaller ones like Microplay might though.

The top ten pornos are all on the Internet. Blah, you actually watch for the storyline? It's funny because I got a hold of some old Hustler video stuff, and it's almost comical how they actually put some sort of plot into the thing. Nobody cares, and now everybody just films the action shots without any useless dialog.

Actually, Sine, back in the late 70's/early 80's, there actually were porn "movies", with decent production values and actual writing and everything. Granted, for the most part the dialogue was still awful, but there are a few good lines I can remember -

A: "I'm telling you, the world record [for getting a guy off via a blowjob] is 6 minutes and 33 seconds."
B: "Is that indoor or outdoor?"
A: "What's the difference?"
B: "Wind resistance."

A: "Ann is pretty good at giving a blowjob, though, isn't she?"
B: "Yeah, I'd have to give her about a seven and three quarters."
A: "Why only 7 3/4?"
B: "That's as high as my scale goes."

A: "All right, fine. Gloria can cook and I'll clean."
B: "I don't cook."
C: "We have a woman come in for that."
A: "Okay, then I'll cook and Gloria can clean."
B: "I don't clean, either."
C: "We have a woman come in twice a week for that."
A: "Well, then, what do you do?"
B: *silence*
A: "Ah, I guess you just suck cock then. Or do you have a woman come in twice a week for that too?"

See? Funny stuff. Also from the 70's is "The Devil in Mrs. Jones", which is about as close as you can get to a porn movie having good, legitimate plot and acting - the female lead, Georgia Spelvin, was an actual actress, and did a decent job with it. (I would have liked the movie a lot more if the sex in it had been any good.)

Anyway, back to the discussion at hand - I believe the death of the pornographic "movie" came about with the advent of video and the growth of porn into a big business, when people eventually found out that people would still pay good money for porn with plots of less and less quality. And then when the internet hit and the main distribution of porn became jpegs and 20-second video clips, it pretty much disappeared entirely from the "mainstream" and now movies with plots are only being produced by a few companies. Hell, movies with vaginal penetration are only being produced by a few companies these days - I read an article once in which an executive of a porn company told the interviewer, "Pussies are shit."

(Note: As you can see, I have sort of an academic interest in porn. I'm no Jim Holliday, but I still find it interesting.)

I did see Dog Soldiers. Liked it a lot. One of the best werewolf movies I've seen.

Some of the more important, interesting, or fun pieces of film/animation in my life: (in no particular order, some I think are better than others but I enjoyed them all very much):

1. Star Wars Epsiode IV: A New Hope
2. Goodfellas
3. Contact
4. Jurassic Park (the original)
5. Moulin Rouge
6. Fight Club
7. Empire of the Sun (I think this is Spielberg actually, one of his lesser-known ones...)
8. Toy Story (which makes the list only I wanted some CG animation on here, and because of the scene with the little green guys in the toy-grab machine. "Farewell, my brothers. I go to a better place!")
9. The Shawshank Redemption
10. Watership Down (This may actually be near or even at the top of my personal list - I haven't seen it in awhile.)

Braveheart would probably make it on here if I'd ever seen the entirety, but I've only seen half of it, and that was only once.

Edutainment award goes to Donald Duck in Mathemagic Land. I'm actually not kidding about this, it's very good.

Extra credit award goes to Big Trouble in Little China, which though a terrible film by film-snob standards is just amusing and entertaining as all get-out to me.

That's really pretty funny stuff.
