As Woodward, Bernstein and Bradlee have all committed to not confirming the identity of Deep Throat until his death, I'd still take a wait and see attitude.

While I may be wrong, I think this is legit. Felt has been a contender for a while; it's not just some random guy claiming he's the answer to the biggest journalistic mystery of our time.

What does give me pause, however, is the notion that while Felt might be telling the truth, there is still the possibility that there are more people, hence Woodward, Bernstein and Bradlee's silence. If Felt's the only one, and he himself has come forward, then there's no reason for the others to remain silent.

Yeah, the confirmation came late in the day.

Wow, one of the great mysteries of journalism finally revealed. For some reason, I expected the event to be a little more momentous. :)

I don't give a shit and a half about the whole Nixon scandle thing, but I do have a question. Why in the monkey of hell would the guy name himself after a blowjob?

The FOX News coverage of this is awesome: How Heroic Was 'Deep Throat'?

They get ethical perspectives from Henry Kissinger and G. Gordon Liddy.
"'Hero' is not the first word that comes to my mind," Henry Kissinger (search), President Richard Nixon's secretary of state, told FOX News on Wednesday.

"I view him as a troubled man. I don't think it's heroic to act as a spy on your president when you're in high office. I could fully understand if he resigned ... or if he went to the prosecutor. That would be heroic," Kissinger said.
And if he went to the prosector, what would have happened? I honestly don't know. Potentially nothing. Nixon was recruiting ex-CIA field agents to gather information. I wouldn't have put intimidating a federal prosecutor beyond him. When the people involved are that powerful, sometimes the only recourse it to take your information to the press.

The next one is my favorite.
"What you are ethically bound to do is go to a grand jury and seek an indictment and not go to a single news source," said Liddy, who was convicted for his role in the scandal.
So the man who led the break-in at the DNC is giving ethical advice on the situation that led to him being caught. That's just too good.

Hey, now, Kupek, don't diss Fox News. They are the most unbiased and respected news station in the country *tries to hold back his laughter/vomit*

Seek, if you read the article, you'll see that Deep Throat was actually a name of a porn video back in the 70's and that's where they got the name from :-)

Deep Throat was a nickname given to the informant by one of the editors in the newsroom as a joke. It caught on.

There's going to be a long article in tomorrow's Washington Post about the whole thing (written by Woodward himself), so that should be worth checking out.

Further indictations that Pat Buchanan is a jackass...

EDIT: Then again, he was a speakerwriter for Nixon. Coupled Kupek two above (Kissinger and Liddy), I think we have an Predictable Opinion Trifecta.

I think this is a good opinion on the surrealism of two ex-cons and a Nixon speechwriter working the TV news circuit.
