Also, I saw a headline about Katie Holmes possibly converting to Scientology and I think that is fairly frightening. She's too cute to start believing in body thetans...

I heard on Howard Stern that she has her very own level 4 thetan handler to protect her from bad press and family members that might talk some sense into her...and to levitate stuff with her magic volcano powers...

Joking or not? I can see why Scientology is banned in several countries if not.

Nope, seriously, she has somebody following her around, hired by boyfriend Tommy Cruise. As I've said before, the more I read about Scientology, the more I wish I could go back in time and throw El Ron into a fucking volcano.

Hey, let's get some money together to fund a national series of TV ads about Scientology...talk a little bit about thetans, and Xenu...set it up so that legally we can't be sued, there's gotta be a way to do it... :)

You have to do it in a country where Scientology is banned. The only thing is that even if you did make it, it would be hard to put commericials on US airwaves without the threat of lawsuits. Hell, even Google still has some of Xenu.net's pages off their records. So, the best thing is already in place, an internet site. As long as you try to preach the word of mouth, Scientology will shrink.

I find it funny that the CoS tried to take them down by using the DCMA. Xenu.net isn't even in the US, so how the fuck can they use the DCMA? Morons.

I fully support Scientology, based on the principle famously outlined by P.T. Barnum.

Blah, one could argue that it favors Darwinism, but it's not just a simple scam. The hook and forms of hypnosis are so subtle, which show deep understanding of how the human mind works. The book itself looks innocent enough. Once you get into the book (which doesn't even mention Scientology), you get the free test, and then it's already interesting enough to fork over a little bit of money for. The early trials aren't that expensive. By the time they've virtually broke your mind, they can get you to empty your bank account. Once they do that, they land you with this wild story about aliens and shit. At that point, your mind is so broken that you believe it without question. Even if you don't, you've already spent all of that money.

Until recently with the advent of the Intehweb, there hasn't been any big source of information on how evil the CoS really is. Plus, it's not just the damage they do to the people in their cult, but the influence outside of it. An entity with that much money in such a power-hungry state is a dangerous thing indeed.

BTW, Barnum never actually said that quote, but whatever.

No reason to be *that* afraid of a lawsuit, in my opinion. A good and well-publicised lawsuit might actually do more to break them than anything else. Can't you just see the media coverage? "The head of the Church of Scientology zealously defended his position on body thetans today..." :)

I've read up on Scientologist methods, yes. My point stands.

Nothing meant by this, just curious: what is it all about?

Good starting points:

Time's 1991 article on it (While your reading that, remember the constant Dianetics commercials that were popular during the 80's and 90's.)
Details of "The Bridge" (different levels of Scientology)
Techniques used in CoS (These are supposed to enhance the ability to communicate, but have been called by one expert "the most overt form of hypnosis used by any destructive cult".)

Actually, yes, there are many reasons to be THAT AFRAID of a lawsuit. They have dodged MUCH MUCH worse, and are involved in many lawsuits a year. Seriously, it's like trying to sue the mob. If the harassment doesn't break you, then they'll just use illegal methods to dispose of you.

It's brilliant. I'm pissed L. Ron thought of it before I did.

Are you sure you're not just being paranoid? How do you know so much about it? I mean, I don't know much about slander and libel lawsuits, but how the hell can anyone defend these guys?

I know enough about it, because there's plenty of information about how they work on the intehweb. It's not paranoia.

Well, the point of a lawsuit would be to get media coverage and get them to have to discuss Xenu on national television - that's the thing that would hurt them, irrespective of how the suit went.

You act like all lawsuits are publically in the media.

This is true. One would have to be sure it would be publicly covered...

Whatever. I have too many problems in my own life to want to think about Scientology. I suppose if Tom Cruise wants to waste a few hundred thousand on level 3 clarity sessions, he can go do it.
