Blah, one could argue that it favors Darwinism, but it's not just a simple scam. The hook and forms of hypnosis are so subtle, which show deep understanding of how the human mind works. The book itself looks innocent enough. Once you get into the book (which doesn't even mention Scientology), you get the free test, and then it's already interesting enough to fork over a little bit of money for. The early trials aren't that expensive. By the time they've virtually broke your mind, they can get you to empty your bank account. Once they do that, they land you with this wild story about aliens and shit. At that point, your mind is so broken that you believe it without question. Even if you don't, you've already spent all of that money.
Until recently with the advent of the Intehweb, there hasn't been any big source of information on how evil the CoS really is. Plus, it's not just the damage they do to the people in their cult, but the influence outside of it. An entity with that much money in such a power-hungry state is a dangerous thing indeed.
BTW, Barnum never actually said that quote, but whatever.
