Looks like they've finished. A seemingly perfect port/update of one of the greatest PC games ever. Runs like a charm.

Play it. Now.

Super Melee would be great if it's multiplayerable.

There was a separate Star Control project designed just to be the most comprehensive Super Melee available (ships from all 3 Star Control games, internet play). Not sure whatever happened to it.

This is just a pure port/upgrade of the 3D0 version of Star Control 2, since the source for that was released in 2002.

I played SC3 melee for a bit and it seems like some of the ships are imbalanced.

Granted, SC2 isn't exactly most balanced (Chmmr would obliterate most small ships without taking damage and Utwig can take out any big ship minus Chenjisu without taking damage) but more balanced than most games I've played if you're using the random selection to determine which ship you use.

The reason I linked Ur-Quan Masters instead of the abandonware SC2 is because the old version of SC2 does not play nicely with modern machines (read: anything post DOS).

It's far better this way. I assure you.

It's not a case of "Well, this is kinda like SC2, and if you liked the original, you'll like this!".

This is "The source code for the original 3D0 port was released several years ago, and we have made it completely compatable and playable on PCs, Macs, and Linux."

I played the original Star Control 1 for the PC a long time ago. Very very good game.

SC2 was vastly superior. Same style of combat (and a lot of ship overlap), but the single player game was much different and much, much better.

Instead of basically being a strategy wargame, SC2 is a hybrid adventure, strategy, exploration game. Truly epic.

I played a game awhile back that I absolutely loved called Starflight (originally a PC game, ported to the Genesis, which was the version I played), and I seem to remember looking these up and hearing that this was similar. Know anything about it?

I might take a look at this if I get a chance.

Quite similar, apparently.

I wouldn't say SC2 is much of a strategy game because you start out too weak to even take on an Ur-Quan Dreadnaught with your entire fleet, and once you get Utwig Juggers it's like one Jugger can take on the entire race of Koar-Ah and Ur-Quan at the same time!

Yeah, that's true, my 3.3 GHz runs like a 386 for those old games. Right now I am trying to get the PC version of Uncharted Waters 2 working well, it seems to work fine with some graphical glitches, and no sound. I am wondering if there is any difference between that and the SNES version? There are also a number of other strategy/simulation games I have downloaded, such as pirates Gold edition. A lot of these old games are quite impressive; I have been having a lot of fun playing around with them.

I've been playing it for several hours now. Reallying enjoying it. Yeah, it does remind me of Starflight, and also Lightspeed.

Man, that was a total waste of a week and missing hours of sleep. Still fun though. The remixed music does add some longevity to the game.
