Ah, my lord. You ran that one through the AOLizer, didn't you?

EDIT: Oh, wait...that's just Zeus's post. Pity, I was actually looking forward to seeing if I could make some sense out of that. Still funny though.

Hmmmm, I can't believe I missed this. Oh well. I don't really have an opinion on it right now, I'll have to use the thing first.

I think a lot of people are quite misinformed about the state of the industry. As far as sales go, Nintendo isn't going to die, Xbox and Gamecube sales have always been fairly equal to one and other; currently both are at about 20 million apiece. Yet Microsoft doesn't have 67 million Gameboy Advance hardware units on the market, so that immediately places Microsoft below Nintendo in the videogame market.

As for company sizes. The market value of Sony according to Forbes is 38 million. Nintendo is worth 12.8 million according to Forbes, so Sony is not "at least 10 times larger than Nintendo", it is about 3 times larger. The stats are from 2004, but I don't think much has changed since then. Sony may have shrunk a little due to their three quarters without any profits, but doubtfully anything signficant.

Xbox is handing it to 'Cube in US and Europe; GC is owning it in Japan, but not enough to make up for the other markets. So, yes, with the handhelds, Nintendo is easily 2nd, but they're third in next gen systems but quite a bit. That's where the argument was

Market value has nothing to do with size. Sony is quite easily 10 times the size of Nintendo but it's Nintendo's profitability that increases it's "value", which, in this particular case, was likely valued based on a going concern assumption, in which case it would likely be a multiple of earnings with an adjustment for assets (I won't get into the technical). If you have that article, send me the link, I'd like to see what they used to calculate "value".

That's why Nintendo, even though they are a fraction of the overall size of Sony, clock in at 1/3 the value, due to their profitability. I'm sure in the past, before the GC dropped their profitability (it's profitable, but not quite as much as the other systems were), the gap was probably smaller.

I don't have the link anymore, I found the article through Google, it was dated February 13th 2004. It didn't mention anything about the formula, just the market value of certain companies. When searching google, I did find this link:

http://www.forbes.com/finance/mktguidea ... ip=6639550

It lists Nintendo as: Assets, $9.59 bil. Market Value, $14.47 bil

Sony as:

http://www.forbes.com/finance/mktguidea ... ip=6821506

Assets, $85.14 bil. Market Value, $35.40 bil.

Well, with assets THAT large, I suppose Sony is one of the largest companies in the world.

Assets are a better indication of sheer size. Market value has so many other things involved in it whereas assets are mostly tangible and used in operations to produce your service or product. Thus, the more you have, the bigger you are.

According to your figures, that puts Sony at about 9 times the size of Nintendo, so close enough.
