An interesting article on the origins of the bible. Books chosen by men to be the "Word of God". It was essentially initiated by Constantine, the greatest of the Emperors since the Restoration of Diocletian.

Constantine, he was an Emperor who in 310 AD saw a vision in the sky; and with that vision he decided that he would announce himself a divine presense on Earth. This is a less famous vision, it was a vision of Apollo. The more famous one is the one that came a year or two later of the Crusifix "By this sign you shall conquer". Constantine as Emperor converted to Christianity, which quickly became very popular in the military; it was a fairly easy religion for them to convert to since Christianity borrowed a lot from the Cult of Mithras (Offshoots include Zoroastrianism and the Cult of Sol Invictus) which were very popular religions in the Imperial Military.

Anyways, Constantine marked the beginning of the widespread emergience of Christianity. Yet the religion as we know it today was essentially definied at the Council of Nicea.

Anyways, those are all my words above, here is the article:

Here is another interesting article on the subject. There are 66 books in the bible, but this article suggests that before constantine there could have been 600. It's a shorter article with links leading off to supporting articles.
