Instead of a spring release in Japan it is now coming out in November. I am not sure how this will effect the North American launch, but I wouldn't expect anything until at least early 2007 with this news; though you never know.

According to my friend who works for EA, "no one working on anything PS3-related expected that thing to come out in Spring."

I wonder whether or not they're really on schedule with all their other parts besides the Blu-Ray. I kinda suspect not.

Yet around Christmas, the jerk salesman at my local EB (who reminded me of a sleazy car salesman) was trying to sway people's purchases by telling them that the PS3 was coming out in 3 months. I couldn't help but laugh out loud.

Maybe Sony is trying to pull a Microsoft and release it over all three markets at the same time?

The same friend who works at EA said Blu-Ray is serving as a convenient way to cover the fact that they're just behind schedule.

I'll buy it when it comes out either way. From a consumer standpoint, I could give a fuck - it'll come out when it comes out, and it'll be fucking awesome whenever the hell that is.

Update 16--the wrap-up: The PS3 will launch "in early November 2006 in Japan, North America and Europe simultaneously." Incorporating the final specifications of the Blu-ray format will enable "playback of BD software at a high bit rate," with "a maximum storage capacity of 50 GB (dual layer) and robust security." The PS3 will be compatible with all kinds of TVs and a high-speed broadband connection. Update 19 (via 1UP's updated page): DRM was what delayed the launch, but the system will come with a 60GB HDD preinstalled before 11/11/06.
