I don't know how the hell I missed this before, but that classic controller thing for the Wii is actually a shell and not a stand-alone remote

Like the Zapper shell, it won't actually function without the Wii-mote hooked up to it. That's what I hoped they would do and what I think is essential to the success of the Virtual Console. Plus, they could keep it cheap (to make and sell) and even sell it with the Wii-mote as a bundle.

Now the only thing they have to do is include it with the first wave of systems to make sure everyone has it. Include the original Mario Bros (not Super) as a built-in game (they won't ever make any real money out of that game) and it'll be like giving an addict their first taste of crack :-)

Yeah, it would be awesome if they included the other controllers in with the system. Relying on the Wiimote is a great idea because it essentially removes the need to recreate any of the technology of the remote which is what would add to the price.

So we'll see. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Nev, didn't you see the pics of the shell from the display at E3? Weren't you *at* E3?

The Virtual Console controller connects to the remote the same way the nunchaku does, via a wire, and it doesn't look like a cock-and-balls when hooked up, no matter how much anybody wants it to.

My main problem with the thing is the placement of the left analog stick. I really like where it is on the GC/Xbox/360, and am not a huge fan of where it is on the PS2. Why'd they have to put it in the same place?

If you prefer the GameCube controller for non-Wii games, can't you just use that? I remember hearing that it has GameCube controller ports.

You can definetely use it for GC games played on the Wii as the system has 4 GC ports and two GC mem card slots (it effectively will fully replace the GC), but knowing NintendHo, they're going to force you to get the classic controller to play the downloadable games.

Mind you, they've announced nothing yet.

The other main difference between using a GC controller and a Wii VC controller is that the VC controller is essentially wireless. My couch is far enough back from my TV that I need extension cables for all my current-gen systems, and it's really a pain the the butt to unfurl/recoil 15 feet of cable every time I play something.

OTOH, I bloody LOVE my wireless 360 controllers - when I pick up the controller from the shelf next to my couch and hit the Guide button, the controller, console, and TV (if I have my A/V selector on the right setting) all turn on; and when I'm done I hit the guide button again, the console and controller both turn off, and then I put the controller back on the shelf. Soooooo nice.

I guess the main thing with the VC controller will be how comfortable it is. Sure, I prefer the 360/Xbox/GC style of controller to the PS2, but it's not like I *hate* the Dual Shock or anything. Besides, now that I think about it, the VC controller might work even better for some GC games (Viewtiful Joe, for instance).

I guess whatever picture I saw on the internet had the controller placed oddly, or perhaps I'm misremembering. I thought it looked like a cock-and-balls, but you're probably right...

There was a mock-up made like that, but I don't think that is the intended design. I sure hope Nintendo knows better than that! But you never know.

Some of us have been enjoying that freedom (other than the initial power up or power down) with the Wavebird, which is an awesome controller and the first truly good wireless console controller.

But it will be nice with the Wii and eventually the 360 to be able to turn the system on with the controller

Yeah, the PS3 controller doesn't have it either...

Honestly, rumble is a gimmick to me. Yeah, it was used well in certain games (MGS, StarFox, Goldeneye), but I really don't miss it at all. I've used Wavebirds almost exclusively for the last 3 years and I much prefer the freedom over a little bit of shaking.
