Making the machine incapable of actually playing used games? 95% of what I buy is used, dammit!

Mind you, it's only a rumour, but it's coming from somewhere. This is an older rumour and is persistent, so you know it's being given serious consideration. And this is Sony, who destroyed CD players in an anti-piracy attempt.

I would never buy a console where I couldn't purchase used games off of eBay. I haven't bought a game in-store in 2 years!

I don't think it'll happen, but I wouldn't rule it out. Sony's always been trying to fight ways to combat anything that takes money away from it (even moreso than most companies) and with the hit they'll be taking on the PS3 (even at that price), I can assure you they're seriously researching the possibility and the net effect it will have on their business. Like I said above, it's an older but persistent rumour, so there's something behind it if it keeps popping up.

This sounds different than the old rumor of hardware/software CP (tying each game to one playstation). This has more to do with using current PC software licensing strategies (EULA) to console games. Realistically speaking, all forms of digital entertainment are moving to such a scheme...DVDs, music, games, broadcasts, etc.

Sony actually taking steps to enforce this issue by placing pressure (legal or allocation) on used game retail stores (like EB/GS, etc) would really not surprise me at all.

Had Sony actually had a postive E3 and a reasonable price point this move might make sense, especially since used games probably do cost the industry a significant amount of money (even if I disagree with the DMCA entirely). But Sony didn't...and doesn't. Too much negative press and momentum to see them actually doing this - but I have no doubt both hardware/software and legal strategies to prevent second game sales have been kicked around in Sony's HQ for some time now.

I don't buy into that reasoning. If there were no cheap used games, I think people would tend to buy less games in total.

As for what Sony will do, when a site I've never heard of reports an unattributated rumor, I don't pay attention.

You've never heard of Gamespot? Yeah, they're picking up on a Gamesradar story, but there's been lots of follow-up afterwards and it's an old rumour which, to me, means there's some small bit of truth to it (no, it's not like the Elvis is alive or the Loch Ness monster rumours; those are completely different).

The used thing is a whole other can of worms. I mean, it's not illegal to sell used books, CDs, or art, so why should it be illegal to sell used DVDs or games (if I'm not mistaken, DVDs are technically a 'licence' as well)? I can't imagine the licencing issues being too much different between all these creative art forms.

So, if something like this goes through, what's next? No used books or artwork? What about electronics, will they find a way to say "you're only buying the licence to use your Toshiba DVD player, so you can't sell it"?

There's a reason they all lost their bid to ban used and rental games back in the day (SNES days, if I'm not mistaken), it's just silly (on a side note, the industry - Nintendo and Sega and maybe NEC - fought against the rental/used industry to ban them from selling used and renting but lost; I believe it was because the courts said "are you fucking mad? You're selling a product, period, and you can't tell someone what to do with something they paid for", which is something that laws like the DMCA were going to address)

That does not confirm it is bogus. It confirms DRM strategies won't be used to tie games into a single machine...the same thing they said months ago.

EVERY company is ALWAYS trying to stop used sales in the games industry. They live and die by their software sales and since they don't directly make coin off of used and it lowers their new prices since same games are available cheaper, it does nothing but hurt them financially. That and illegal copies. Like I mentioned before, the hardware manufacturers in both Japan and US tried to illegalize BOTH renting and selling of used games but were shot down. Don't think they won't try to limit the use of software on their machines if they think they can get away with it.

To me, the persistence of this rumour simply means this is something they've been contemplating for a while. Don't mean it's going to happen, just the they're looking into the possibility.
