Are there better realtime communication avenues than IRC?

I like hanging out with people online.

However I like it best in realtime. However it seems IRC is still the only real way to do that, assuming I don't already know the person and can use IM.

Anyone know of any better protocols, or sites with cooler chat tech? (Public gaming channels don't count unless you know one that is just AMAZING.)

mIRC, I have it up 24/7, it's the unnofficial chat program of Utopia. IM I actually only use for real life friends and some important Internet friends.
