The Seeker wrote:Of the older FF games (1-5), FF3j was my favourite. I didn't really like FFII (4) when it first came out, mostly because I required games to be fun and without a lot of annoying small things to do; unfortunately FF4 was both very easy and had plenty of little annoying things about it (all of which were fixed for the GBA release; and of course, that awesome final dungeon added). When FF4 came out, there were just better RPGs available, particularly on the Sega side of things.
I mostly agree--I like the older FF games, but only FFVI and, to an extent, FFV, really do anything for me.
The Seeker wrote:FF6 brought RPGs to a whole new level, it was incredibly solid. Still one of my favourite RPGs to date.
Amen to that.
The Seeker wrote:FF7, liked the part when they were in Midgar, but the rest of it was fairly generic.
I've heard this opinion before, and while gameplay-wise, I agree, I'm still a supporter of FFVII's plot. I think the characters were really made very complicated, and the tone was kept even when the dystopian Midgar is less of a backdrop.
The Seeker wrote:FF8 I loved the whole way through, totally unique, revamped systems that worked better. Finally more difficulty than the last few FF games that had been released here, and an outstanding musical score topped off with an incredible world, story, and characters.
Eh...My opinion is, with the exception of Zell and Rinoa, the characters were pretty good. Effectively, the game was AWESOME up through disc 2, than REALLY BAD afterword. It was as if they really didn't know how to do a militaristic, futuristic FF, so they half-assed it with a Star Trek plot and added in a half-assed love story.
Agreed on the soundtrack though. World, too, was pretty interesting.
The Seeker wrote:FF9 was more or less an FF7 clone, it followed a very similar story pattern; cool beginning, then chase the metrosexual villain around the world. Though I felt this game was more solid than FF7 in a lot of departments, but worse in some others. Not a very original game like the last one.
Oh no no no! You can't call FFIX an FFVII clone, because they're really very different. The metrosexual villain isn't even unveiled until the end of disc one, and you know nothing about him until you're well into disc two. While it lacked the uniqueness of VIII's basic premise, IX's story was far more aesthetically pleasing, and for the first time in a long while actually "felt" like an FF game. Add in a great soundtrack, and a very colorful cast of characters, not to mention some really great set pieces and locations, and you have what could easily compete for the best FF of the PSX-era.
The Seeker wrote:FF10 did a lot for the series cosmetically, but overall it was a weaker game than previous installments.
How do you mean weaker? I thought the plot did quite well, considering it doesn't have a happy ending, and the main character dies.
The Seeker wrote:FF12 was a much stronger game, there were some incredible locations in this game. The gameplay system was also quite good. Unfortunately I found the replay value to be quite limiting due to everything being spread out so far on the world map, in dungeons, and in towns.
Mmm. Yeah, I love FFXII to death. It combined the best of FFVIII and FFIX.
