Guys, I got a pretty good copy of Suikoden 1 for PSX for $30 'cause I thought one of my buds wanted it. Turns out they don't. If one of you guys wants it, you can have it for that price (plus shipping, of course). Otherwise, I'll just return it.

Let me know, first post who wants it gets it

If I find one, sure. But you should just get the superior DC version

I had S1 and S2 but sold them both. Managed to get a copy of S1 again at Wal Mart for $20 new around the time the PS2 came out, but haven't since come across a copy of S2 anywhere but eBay.

I actually got S2 when I was doing a re-order at my store. My supplier was getting rid of them and I got it for $41. It's still sealed and I don't dare open it 'cause it would knock $100 off the value. I've been trying to get a disc-only copy just so I can play the damned thing

Yep, complete, case and manual included. It's in pretty solid shape too. North American version don't forget

Still trying to get ahold of the friend I sold S2 for for $100 for his girlfriend's birthday. I'd buy it back for as much now.

Not that the game is worth so much (although it is awesome), but I would like to have it again to go with 1, 3, and 5... 4 and Tactics are lame. Bought them both, beat 'em, and sold them for the shit they were.

But you can get them relatively cheap and it would probably increase the selling price to have the whole collection

Not by much. Most anybody who knows about the series knows 4 and Tactics are junk.

I didn't much care for 3 either, but it has become much better with the gift of hindsight.

Really? I always felt it tried for too much ambition and fell too short. Playing through all three of those chapters three times was just brutal, especially since you could hardly do ANY recruiting (which is the best PART of Suikoden) until after you'd complete all of those bits, and once they were all complete, you basically HAD most of the 108 Stars in your group already, through whatever arbitrary reason there was.

I bought S3 and had my roommate play it for me because it was boring enough getting through the story once let alone 3 times.

I'd say S2 would be the best if not having 108 Stars didn't set you back so much. I realize it's the same for S1 but no one ever cares about what happened to Gremio so it's no loss there.

The retreading of the same areas again and again with each character was it's biggest downfall. I did like seeing the same situations from different points of view, though. I still love it dispite its flaws.

I'd like for them to revisit the Trinity system if they could flesh it out so that the characters aren't walking the same areas... maybe one character in the Grasslands, one in Harmonia, and one elsewhere. Doesn't look like it's going to happen, though, with 4 and 5 reverting to the single mute hero.

Multiple POV is heavily used in the Japanese dating sim/visual novel genre and I think it's generally used poorly. All it does is give you an excuse to take the same content and multiple it by 3 or 5 and pass it off as new content. Usually the new viewpoint is either a sob story like how the bad guys were abused in their childhood, or it adds nothing substantial that you couldn't have already known in the first pass of the story. Let's suppose you've a game where the hero of S1, S2, and S3 meet. Does this warrant 3 separate point of views? Say you start with the viewpoint of the Flame Champion of S3. Does it really matter that you've to know that McDohl killed his father to get to where he is, or that the hero of S2 watched his sister die and possibly killed his best friend? How does these knowledge add anything to the player if our viewpoint was that of S3? Likewise if you're McDohl, what does knowing about the story of S2/S3 really do anything to you?

I'm sure there are some circumstances it would work out, but I've yet to see it used successfully. I thought Luc's POV was at least innovative. It's like playing the game with the villian's free pass to everything. You don't need to be bothered with the mundane because you're the bad guy. While the good guys need to climb 100 floors of trial of whatever, you, as Luc, can just show up whereever is convenient! Although it's pretty much just a sob story, at least it didn't bore you with too much details, and it's kind of fun to go back and flatten your own guys while playing the role of the bad guy.

That was certainly a nice and unexpected bonus.

I found it very strange that Luc plays a quiet, reflective kid in SU1 and a quiet, reflective bad-ass in SU2, and then a complete and total DOUCHBAG in SU3.

It's a weird progression, and even though it's explained, I wish Luc had had more character development in the previous Suikodens in order to give him more of an emotional impact in SU3.

And then there's Sarah, who comes out of nowhere. I never liked her, I really didn't. The only one of the bad guys in SU3 that I liked was Albert, because he had a bad-ass coat and he was way cooler than the lame-ass strategist you actually get in Suikoden 3 (I forget his name, but it was like Sebastian or something? I dunno, he was a total dork.) Even the tactically inefficient Eleanor from SU4 was cooler than the guy from Suikoden 3.

Also, what was Yuber's role in Suikoden 3 again? I forget what his whole purpose in the plot was besides just some hired muscle. Geddoe seems to know him, when they fight at the end, but you don't really get anything more than that, do you?

Yuber seems to be just around wherever there is death and destruction.

Ironically, did you know that Suikoden 3 features the only storyline where you actually save the ENTIRE world?

It's kind of a deviation from the relatively small-scaled national conflicts of games past and post.

I'll have to pass — thanks, though. I'm skint at the moment and it's not quite worth the hassle of getting my PS2 modded.
